Sportrak exhaust

Forum:

just been washing the sporty and noticed there is a lot of movement when touching exhaust. Had a look underneath and the exhaust pipe has corroded just where it joins the first big part (excuse the terminology!)To the point where one good twist would probably sheer the lot off!

What do i need as a replacement is it the whole exhaust or just the rear pipe, tailring etc i havent a clue. Also the bit at the end of the exaust which holds it up was once i assume a U shape it has now lost a bit and appears to be stuck to the end of exhaust to hold it up. Are these readily available as replacments?

Or should i just take it down to an exhaust center??

As always all help on this jorum is greatly appreciated

thanks
matt

Rear box.

Rear box is about £50. Probably needs a new rubber hanger or hangers. If the metal support hook has broken away then it will need a small welding job.
Easily diy if you have a mig welder. Order a rear sporty exhaust box at a good local motor shop.

You may well be able to find

You may well be able to find them a bit lower than £50 - Got ours from CES where they are a stock Item, have a look at www.cesuk.com for about £40 IIRC.

VERY, VERY easy exhaust to change, just remember the fireputty for the joints, and as Mace says, make sure the rubber hangers are all still there.

Rubber hangers

hi thanks for the replies what do you mean about the rubber hangers and fire putty - where do they come into it?

cheers

Fit it .............

Rubber hangers ... they look like big thick rubber bands. The rubber hangers fit onto the exhaust bracket and then hang from the hooks on the sporty. The rubber hangers provide suspension so the exhaust can shake about whilst bolted to the engine manifold. One at each end of the rear exhaust. Get then from your local motor shop ... they have catalogues of exhausts.

The job is done safely if you have the use of an inspection pit. Use of a bottle jack or trolley jack must be done with extreme care since you will need to get under the car. Do not get under the car without axle stands in their correct position -- under each side of the rear axle.
NB .... Its impossible to get the tail pipe over the axle. To remove and fit the new tailpipe the rear of the car must be lifted so the wheels/axle fall lower.
1. Use axle stands and first detach the exhaust from the front pipe and rear hangers. Its often easier to use a hack saw and cut through the rear pipe to make handling easier. However you will not be able to pull the silence clear - it jambs above the rear axle.
2 Remove the axle stands. lower the car so the car stands on its wheels.
3. Use a jack placed under the tow bar bracket and lift the body of the car. Do not put the jack under the axle ... you raise the body not the wheels! DO NOT get under the car whilst its lifted and supported on the tow bar - it is likely to collapse. Raising the body drops the axle and raises the car body sufficiently to provide clearance to pass the exhaust over the axle. From the rear of the car and without getting under the car, remove the old silencer , push the new silencer into position. Now lower the car onto its wheels taking care not to trap the new silencer.
4. Again use axle stands and raise the car. With the car secure you you can get under the car and safely fit the hangers and exhaust bolts etc. Rather than use exhaust paste at the joining of the exhaust pipes, buy a new gasket. If a daihatsu gasket is not available ask you local motor shop to match one against any other type of car - get the nearest fit. The gasket fits into a recess in the flange at the exhaust pipe ... its obvious when you look! Exhaust paste gets brittle and falls out and the exhaust leaks at the joint.

EXHAUST

Hi

You just need the tail box and fin (rear box). Dependant on how old the car is and how long you itend using it a stainless is available from Rimmer Bros. Expensve but mine has been on for 12 years and done 80K miles.

Seperating the front pipe from the rear box can be difficult because of corrosion and perhaps a spray of penerang oil the night before might ease the job. I have to admit that when I went to put the Stainless on I couldn't seperate the pipes so took the car and the complete pipe to a local tyre/Exhaust fitter, not KWIKFIT and they did the job for £5.

Good Luck

sporty exhaust

nearly perfect

forgot one really important thing when jacking the rear of the car PLEASE PLEASE chock or trap the front wheels too many people take too many risks when doing this type of job and allow yourself plenty of time i would hate to see another person injured taking a shortcut
