Forum:
Hello i have a Sportrack 1995 and the other day when i got to work i notice the bottle for the coolant had come of its holder and was pointing downwards with no coolant in it so i put it back and refill the bottle and the radiator now the engine is running fine but the temperature gauge keeps showing cold or just over is there air in the system can anybody tell me how to release the air from the system or is it the thermostat.I know it's only a small problem but i like to keep check on the temperature of the engine.
Thanks CHARLEY.
Heater cold?
Try the heater. If the heater is always cold then the thermostat is stuck open and needs replacing. New thermostat is approx £17. Drain the system before starting but use a bucket - the coolant can be re-used. Use thread lock when replacing the thermostat housing bolts and do not tighten them above 5lb/inch. You must unbolt and lift clear the steering pump to reach the thermostat bolts. Easy job.
Air locks ..... they clear themselves. There is no air bleed valve etc.
Thanks Mace
Thanks Mace i will do the job at the weekend thanks once again
for your help.Charley
Make certain you do this .......
NB .... when fitting the new thermostat make certain the 'jiggle' is placed at the highest point in the housing. The 'jiggle' is the hole in the thermostat holding the loose jiggle! If you get it wrong the air will not be vented from the engine block when coolant is filled.
NB ... new thermostat should come with a new gasket.

hi
i have cold air coming out of the blowers all the time - do you think this may be a thrmostat issue even though the temp gauge goes up to half way after bout 10mins?
thanks

You should start a fresh problem page and ask your question, rather than extend a page belonging to another member!
If your radiator is hot and the heater remains cold then its a heater blower problem. Use the search option form the top bar and search this site. Heater blower problem is a burned resistor. It will need replacing.
If your radiator is hot and heater is hot but taking 10 minutes to reach temperature, then the thermostat is stuck open and needs replacing. Stuck thermostat gives slow engine heating, poor heater flow and increased mpg.
PS .. it has been know for sellers to bypass the heater. If the heater matrix is leaking crooks bypass the matrix stopping any coolant entering the heater matrix. Hence no heat and you are unaware the matrix is holed. Check inside the engine compartment ... left side of balkhead towards the bottom. There are 2 pipes that circulate water through the matrix. Has someone joined the pipes so no water is entering your heater matrix?
Apologies
apologies all will do next time - thanks for your answer
