Fourtrak charging problem

Forum:

hi, my mate has a 1989 fourtrak el 2.0 petrol and he keeps getting wiring problems. just recently after an off road day the charge light came on and has not gone off. the car has had a new alternator, regulator and battery but it still will not go off, i have tested everything with a multimeter and it is fine, all connections have been cleaned but the alternator will only charg at 12.2 volts no matter what we do, we have basically stripped the car and checked every wire individually but there is nothing we can find wrong, could someone please help. thanks

Not sure about the petrols,

Not sure about the petrols, but those symptons on a diesel usually mean stuffed brushes in the alternator. Seeing as it is new, you would not expect them to be dead yet, but perhaps they are jammed with mud or something.

Growing old is compulsary, growing up isnt.
MUD MAKES EXCELLENT TOOTHPASTE.

fourtrak charging problem

hi

sounds like a busted bushpack or plate to me. you can buy this part on its own, it is sat on top of the alternator held on by two bolts but you may have to remove the rear end frame to free it not to sure

bush length exposed 20.0mm minimum length 14.9mm

alternator output should be 13.8-14.8 v @20oc 10 A with enigine revs increased if not replace the regulator test amp using ampmeter postive to terminal B neg to batt Earth with voltmeter + to terminal B neg to earth test under load headlights on main beam heater at high engine speed at 1300 rpm should be 20 A hope this helps

regards
