Sloppy gear lever

Forum:

Hi, I have a very clean 89 Lwb petrol fourtrak which i got for peanuts. My main problem is that the main gear lever is very sloppy, its like stiring porridge, is there a easy solution? Also i am thinking about a engine swap to diesel. Now i can get a rotten diesel fourtrak locally, but what other makes of engines could fit that would be more powerful than the standard fourtrak turbo diesel? but i also know of a rover V8 thats going cheap so i am a bit torn between what to do, Cheers

The engine swap. If you put

The engine swap. If you put a Daihatsu 2.8 in it, remember you'll also need the bell housing, and the primary (gearbox) shaft, or the compleat gearbox to go with it.
As for the V8, it is do-able. Have a look at this page: http://www.daihatsu-drivers.co.uk/node/4465

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

For the sloppy gearlever,

For the sloppy gearlever, there is a moulded cup that sits under the ball on the lever. These deteriorate with age, and cause this. There is another cup that sits on top of the ball, under the pressure spring. This also deteriorates, doubling your woes.
As for engine swap, if you change from petrol to diesel, you will either have to, change diff ratios as petrol diffs are much lower, or go much bigger wheels to make up for the difference.
