Problems engaging 4 wheel Drive

Forum:

I have just brought a 1992 K reg fourtrack 2.8TD and over the moon with it. The only problem I have is that when moved into 4WD the front wheels do not engage, the light comes on the front prop shaft does not spin freely but when off road the rear wheels spin and nothing from the front. I have Auto locking hubs and that is about the extent of my mechanical knowledge. Does this sound like the hubs are faulty/seized or something more drastic? any help/advice appreciated.

Sertainly sounds like the auto hubs have seezed. Take them apart. Clean them up. Grease them up. Put them back together. If that doesn't work, then worry about brocken half shafts / diffs.
I'd say the hubs are the most likely culpret though.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Easy????

Thanks for the reply

As I mentioned my mechanical know how is very limited, is cleaning the auto hubs a straightforward job I can have a go at or is it something I have to put it in the garage for.

Firstly before taking

Firstly before taking anything apart get underneath and try and turn the front driveshafts, if the hubs are working you'll get a few turns and then they will lock. If not then you can undo the six nuts that hold the free wheeling unit on and take it off which can be done with the road wheel on. Then check its located properly when you put it back on occasionally you'll find they've been fitted wrongly and you only need one at fault to get no drive to the front wheels. If that doesn't cure things best option is to swap them for manual locking hubs from someone like milner off road
