diesel fuel problem - think

Forum:

Hi
Driving in to town last night and the engine (Daihatsu 2.8 NAD) suddenly started stalling. But was very irregular. Like a fuel starvation. It woould run fine for a while then all of a sudden stumlbe for a bit. I pulled over a few times to check things over but evrything seemed fine. I could rev the engine fine. The stumbling engine could stumble at any rpm. I left it for a while in town and drove nearly all the way home (10 miles) without any coughing at all. However just as I entered the village the problem started again. Before I turned then engine off I pressed the fuel feed primer on top of the filter and the engine stopped. I havent been able to start it since. I primed the fuel line until there was resistance from the primer but htis made no difference.

I'm going to check the fuel return pipe next as I'm running out of ideas on this one. Is it worth crimping the return pipe

Any help greatly appreciated

Cheers

Update
right - had alook at the glow plugs thisa morning and they seemed quite dry. I poured a little diesel in to where the glow plugs seat and the thing fired up - albeit momentarily. So i'm thinking fuel starvation. Checked the fuel return pipe as well and that seemed fine (fuel flowed freely back from the tank )

Any suggestions?

fuel problem

first off i would cool at the fuel filter to see if its clogged, you can bypass this and with a small bit of copper pipe to join the two ends together if it starts and runs new filter required but if its not that and it still wont run i and you have enough fuel in the system and havent run it down to almost zero

i would also look at the fuel lines underneath the vch as these are a soft metal and prone to rusting it may be as simple as a hole in a pipe sucking in air rather than fuel look for and damp patches on the ground after you have attempted to start the vch along the came line behind the drivers side rear wheel is a plate that protects the fuel filler and breather pipes and its also got the fuel outlet and return pipes located under this plate these are rubber and platic in someplaces again they can split and crack over time but i would expect a damp rear mudflap if they had gone but still woth checking

if after that you still cant get the thing to start try undoing the pipe at number 1 injector and looking for fuel as some else cranks the engine no fuel would mean if every other check had been conpleted a failure of the pump but i think it may be one of the other things listed
