prob with fourtrak

Forum:

when putting in 4 wheel drive only the rear wheels rotate the front prop still spins but no wheel movement is this something to do with the auto hubs?

4 wheel drive.

If you have auto hubs I would imagine they may have ceased in the off position and although the diff is turning the drive shaft is not engaged with the hubs. If you have manual hubs you must turn the centre of each front hub to LOCK which will lock the hubs to the shafts.

It is quite common for the Auto hubs to seize if not used regular.

it has the auto hubs as when

it has the auto hubs as when i first got it the 4 wheel drive was workin which was only 2 weeks ago then on full lock it was knocking ( in 4wd) as if a cv joint had started to go then hasnt worked since

Hubs

Yes I know what you mean and normally that knocking does indicate warn CV's. In order for you to lose drive the CV joints or the main drive CV would have either lost its balls and probably seperated from the shaft. That should be obvious from looking beneath. Plus of course the noisewould be quite obvious.

If you only purchased the car two weeks ago then I would consult who ever sold it to you as you do have, even with aprivate seller, some legal redress if you can prove that they were aware of an imminent fault. Not that easy to always do and probably you would need to rely on his/hers sence of fairness.

If, as you say the 4 WD was definitely working 2 weeks agao then you have as far as I can see 4 possible problems.

1 The diff
2 The CV Joints/s
3 Knackered hubs
4 Stripped drive shaft splines.

You said that the prop is turning to the front diff but the wheels are not turning when in 4WD. You have obviously lifted the car up off all 4 wheels. Were the drive shafts turning to the wheels? If not then the diff may be shot or the inner cv's/splines. If they were turning then which part is stationery? If it is the wheels only then the answer must lie with either the outer cvs/splines or the hubs.

I would have thought the Cv in both cases will be obvious and I would think that with the vehicle staitionery you should be able to locate the offending item by manually turning the driveshafts which should offer no risistnce and be noisy. I would have expected the CV to be in bits and obvious from just looking.

I am sure another member of the forum will have additional suggestions as these are just those in my mind as I haven't had this problem. I hope someone can come up with a simple solution.
