Running sick on choke

Forum:

Can anybody shed any ideas on the cause of my 1997 sportrack 1.6, on choke holds back badly, but runs fine when comes off choke. I have replaced plugs, leads, air filter, distributor cap and arm.

Blocked jets?

Possible blockage in the carb, assuming your Sporty has a carb. You say its a 1997 sportrack 1.6 so I assume its not an injection model.

I would try creating a vacuum at the carb. This method was/is well know to older diy mechanics.
1. Remove air filter and get 'direct' access into the air intake.
2. Run engine at high revs and keep it high!
3. Hold a clean cotton cloth [no fibres] over the inake to create a suck/vacuum inside the air intake. You will need to fold the cloth into a thick pad. Obviously dont let the cloth become sucked into the air intake. Try not to stall the engine.
The created vacuum often sucks any dirt out from the jets.

If that fails then use 'Redex' additive or another additive into the fuel. You can pour/drip some redex or clean engine oil [redex is best] directly into the carb whilst the revs run high - dont stall the engine and no blocking the air intake. You will hear the engine gulp at the mixture. Let it 'tick over at highish revs' for 20seconds, then rev the engine. The exhaust will smoke like a chimney until the oil gets burned away. The process cleans and lubricates the carb.
If the engine stutters to a halt you might need to remove and clean the plugs -- usually it will crank over and refire without cleaning the plugs.

CHOKE

A 1997 Sportrak is an injection model and the choke for want of a better description is automatically controlled by the EMU. It will enrich the mix on start and as the sensors register normal operating temperatures it will adjust the mixture accordingly.

I have a 96 and a 91 Sportrak, both run on K&N filter yet the 1996 does hold back much more than the 1991. Both have CATS fitted so I suspect it may be partly due to the tighter emissions laws introduced between the production of the two cars however it could be a heat sensor being on the lazy side. I did a paper on the forum about testing sensors and the way to short out the diagnostic and what the various fault indicators meant. You will find it on one or two of my papers.

I have returned to a normal Air intake for winter on the older car but have noticed no difference at all but the 96 is definitely more hesitant for the first mile or two.

Running sick on choke

Thanks for ideas, will be getting round to testing, just replaced cam belt and leaky cam oil seal.
it is definatly an injection model, so thanks for suggestions OLDMINIMAN. I will let you know results as will have time next week to test.
