Forum:
Hi all my daughters H reg Rocky has just suffered a broken ignition key, it has boken off deep inside the ignition lock !!!.
Is it as bad as i think it is ?, I suppose the ignition lock has got to be removed and probably replaced if ever one can be found anywhere ?.
i think she is in deep ***t personally.
what makes it ten times worse is as follows, i have just spent 6 weekends (of my spare time) replacing her horse trailer floor in readiness for the first major horse event of the year this coming weekned and we havent got a motor to tow it !!!!!!!!, gggrrrr
can anybody out there offer and help or advice, perhaps if you live in bedfordshire i could borrow your rocky for the day LOL.

Bypass..
Mr Toad,
I'm BACK....... hope you are well.... personally, If I really needed to use the truck at the weekend I would remove the the ignition and baypass it (hot wire !) very naughty but it will get you going.
Then I would be in Ebay searching for a fourtrak breaker who will do a good deal on locks, key and ignition :o)

thanks for your pennorth there buddy, if i knew where to start in taking it off i would feel much better about it.
once i have removed the canopy/shroud i visualise that there are two bolts holding it to the column, these bolts will have had the heads sheared off when it was assembled in 1992, so these would have to be drilled out, until this is done it cant steer, but at the moment it is about 2 miles from home parked in a field, although a mains supply is about 50 yards away !..
it never rains but it pours eh.

bust key
shouldn't need to take the shroud off as long as the brokem part is still in the barrel just stick the rest of the key in and use as normal a word of warning through be v careful when going over any bumps i had the key try and jump out a couple of times deffo a "get you home only"
fixed it, thank the lord ...
A nice man in a van came from Milton Keynes tonight, he had a special tool which got the broken piece out very easily, he supplied a new key as well, for £75 , which considering this didnt involve taking any of it to bits or replacing anything i was quite pleased with the end result, plus of course it was the most easy (for me) solution.

hummmm,
Tim,
as stated in the previuos comment, can you not insert the remaining end of the key in the barrel and try to turn the ignition?
You say it is snapped off deep... but I'm guessing you have already tried that.
With respects to the drill, do you not have a good battery drill?
(if not screwfix are doing an amazing deal on an 18V Mikita cordless combie drill with 3 batteries, £80.. very good value...
Have looked at the service manual, look under 'steering' page SR40
if you get really stuck and the horsey event is of great importance I now drive a Mitsubusi L200 (51 plate), ... :0) currently for sale too.

thanks H and Antraxx99
Very good suggestions from both of you, how much for the Mitsubishi H ?. a few thousands i'll bet, LOL.
I tried tweezers, no good, tried to get the steering wheel off, cant as yet get the horn button off !, however i did get the Steering column shroud off, so the indicators and wiper switch wobbles about now, i now need to get the lower shroud panel off,the hand throttle is ok, but the knob on the left side remains stuck fast.
However all is not lost, we can now at least see (in the distance) the white wiring plug where the wires from the ignition switch goto, and my daughter reckons she knows someone who can "temporarily" HOT WIRE it.
But as for taking the Ignition Switch off the column, this in itself looks nothing like it shows in the manual, it looks to be integral with the column hhhmmm.
good idea, sticking in whatever is left of the key, but that doesnt work either !.
good idea also, trying a breaker, might eventually go in this direction, even if we have to get a garage to fit it, but for now, hot wiring it seems favorite !.

bust key
hiya TT
this aint as bad as it seems (I hope)
1 with the bust part of the key still in the lock insert broken key and turn the lock to position 1 and pull the barrel out (it will come out)i aint sure if i am remembering this bit right it may mean you have to drop the shroud and push a pin or sprung loaded ball in from underneath while the key is in position 1, it has been a while
2 with the barrel out it is possible to tap the broken bit out by turning it on its head "gently" tapping the bottom while pressing in the lock teeth (can't think of correct name, getting old, this happened to "thug (r.i.p)" a while back
good luck
The Key To Removal
One old trick I use is to use a flattened welding rod, push this into the ignition barrel until it reaches the key, if not file it flatter until it does.
Apply some superglue to the end and reinsert, leave for about 30 minutes for the glue to harden thoroughly, and gently pull the key out.
