Help required! I have a Sportrak and she has been absolutely fine for the past year that I have owned her. However, when I approach roundabouts and take my foot off the accelerator to apply the brake, 8/10 times the engine dies. Also when approaching a junction and I take my foot off and change gear etc, the engine cuts out. Not only that but, it then takes about 6 or 8 turns of the ignition key to get her going again. The only way to avoid this happening is to slow down on the handbrake and keep revving to keep the engine going! I havent changed the petrol garage however, I have recently drained out the petrol tank and filtered the petrol incase the engine has picked up debris. The petrol was clean though. No water in it either. I'd love to hear from anyone with any suggestions as it is making me think twice before going out in her now!
Carb or injection
You dont write if its a carb or injection model.
If carb model try creating a vacuum in the air intake. A jet could be blocked - had similar problem on another car. Remove the air filter, the nearer you can get to the carb the better - possibly to the intake throat of the carb. Run the engine until hot. Using a big wad of clean fibre free cloth, rev the engine and keep the revs high whilst pressing the cloth over the intake to starve the engine of air. Dont let the cloth get sucked into the carb. Dont let it kill the engine completely but let it gasp for air. The vacuum created will pull any dirt from the carb jets.
If its an injector model use a fuel additive for injection engines.
Both carb and injection .... Air could be another problem. Check all carb hoses for air leaks/loose clips and splits/pin holes.
Didnt read the other reply,
Didnt read the other reply, so i may be repeating. But my bet is on your Mass Air Flow Meter/ Sensor (MAS). Pick one up from scrappy for about £20, there stupid prices at the dealers!!
