buying '87 2.0 soft top fourtrack for £100 - what should i check for??

Forum:

Hi there,

I'm buying am 87 2.0 petrol fourtrack for £100 so I can take it on the plymouth - dakar charity challenge drive to Timbuctu. http://www.plymouth-dakar.co.uk/

I'm not a novice to this sort of thing but would welcome what key areas to look for weaknesses. Obviously it's only £100 so if it drives I'll be lucky!!! It's MOT'd and Taxed for 3 months and I'm told it runs fine.

I assume main areas to check are general state of engine, gearbox, clutch, chassic rot. Also making sure can change from 2WD to 4WD will be essential and I believe there's also high and low range gear boxes??

Most other stuff can be deal with as and when and shouldn't cost the earth. I assuemt eh bearings go a fair bit as do UJs. Anything else or any tips for how to check if it's knackered or not?

Also - any idea what sort of top speed and max cruising speed i can expect and what MPG is roughly? 25MPG+?

Cheers in advance - sure I'll be supping your advice a fair bit over the next few months.

Body work, (rear floor and

Body work, (rear floor and rear wheel arches). Electrics, fuel guage and temp guage working OK. Main / dip beam switch may well need cleaning up. Carb. Sometimes you get crud in the flote chamber, makes for good kangerroo pull aways, but will run fine above tick over. Cheack changing down through gears. Is it hard to get gears. Is reverse a pain to select. The main shaft nut in the gearbox has a habit of working loose. Easy to fix. Yes it does have low range. Mine used to do 80-85 at a push. Crused, if that's what you could call it' at 60. About 17-20mpg was a good fuel return. Honest.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Body work is a good point - will check as best I can and see if it is bad then how bad it is. Only needs to do 1 more MOT and if lloking light that may fail it I'm sure I can get hold of a welding torch off a mate and bodge something.

Electrics I'm sure can sort with a bit of patience - main/dip would be a bonus anyhow

Carb shouldn't be too tricky to clean up.

The info about the main shaft nut is very helpful indeed and will check it even it gears feel OK

Low range could be exteremly handy (if you need it you need it!!)

MPG = OMG Cray 2

Thanks again

Having driven in western sahara in the pastI would suggest that you go through the threads on this site and follow assassins advice over preparing and desertising your truck.Cos believe me its hard on you and the vehicle.would like to do it myself one of these years just to prove to me that I could still do it.What charity are you looking for sponsorship for? Good luck any way Geoff

thanks for the advice. i just came back from a 7 month drive from london to cape town in a 1994 110 land rover defender panel van. we went via eastern europe, middle east and then down east coast of africa cutting through the middle to the west coast to cape town. 7 months, 25 countries crossed and 23k miles. actually i found the driving OK except very stressful and tiring some times. the car (only £4.5k with a load of extra trimmings) did extremely well is some very harsh conditions. It's up for sale if anyone's interested??

I'll take the fourtrak as basic as is. stipulations of the rally say can only spend £15 preparing the car for the trip. reckon i'll spend it on better suspension or some tyres from a scrappy.

A freind of mine runs an MS charity and another friend in south africa runs a charity to help educate under priviledged kids so we'll do it for them 50/50.

I will try to keep the forum up to date of how i get on.
