Needs more details.

Can you explain what you mean by 'pick up throught the gears'?
Related to gear box or engine revs?

engine revs mate ,1st and

engine revs mate ,1st and second gear ok but the other three when you put your foot down there don't seem to be that much go in the engine ,it does'nt misfire or splutter just picks up speed very slowly .Thanks for the replie and concern,Dan

What sort of car have you

What sort of car have you moved from? Maybe you are just expecting more than the car has got. It's only a 1600 (built more with torque in mind, than top end grunt) in quite a heavy car. The power to waight ratio is very poor. I'd say my Sporti only really pulles like mad through the first two gears. Not saying this is the case, but I know mine felt half dead after a 2ltr Mondeo estate, and that isn't exactly a sports car...

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

mg zr

I still have a mg zr which my wife drives i just wanted a good work horse so you think this could be the problem then?

Distributor.

My sporty goes like shiit from a shovel. No problem with acceleration in any gear.
First check the distributor contact gap. Despite what the book writes, the contact gap is 1 mm. Gap easiest set if distributor is removed.

Next check the distributor timing. A few degrees out and you loose acceleration.

Probably worh replacing the rotor arm and distributor cap. Get then from a local motor shop and not from an expensive Daihatsu garage.

If you feel brave enough to remove the distributor, check the centifugal weighs are freely moving. They adjust the advancement and if sticky the acceleration will be very poor.

When refitting the distributor make certain the timing is done on compression stroke and not on exhaust stroke. Get it 180degree out and it will never fire up!

Could Be

One thing you could check is if the laughing shaft has come off the giggle pin, i know it sounds strange but it would be something that effects the tackleacker.
