banging grinding fourtrak

Forum:

Hi my 1995 fourtrak started making an awful metallic grinding noise from the front end. only twice in 19 miles. the left freewheeling hub was full of chewed up spring housing and the big coil spring was loose inside. i replaced the hub but while driving every thing is ok for a while then i get a grinding noisebetween front wheels then a bang as if something (splines???)are engaging then are getting fired away from each other.the noise is similar to::imagine a brake pad come adrift,a grinding followed by a bang as the pad is flung out.(its not the pads).please help!!!!

sounds like you assembled

sounds like you assembled the new auto hub onto the hub wrong and its tried to engage

reply to aobeert

nope it went on right ive had to tighten a lot of wheel bearings up in the past so ime familiar with the set up. also the drivers side has started to be chewed up it seems like something is pushing them outward????could it have anything to do with the transfer box?? cheers

well to get round that one

If you believe it to be the transfer box take out the complete front prop shaft and then drive it about, that will elliminate that possibilty

replyto theres mud

thanks ile try it.does it take much to remove the shaft as theres a lot of rust and mud under there? cheers

no

eight nuts n bolts, four on each end, 14mm spanner x2 is all you need, might be a bit tight but simple enough.

ok

ile set to it now i was thinking of taking all of the guts out of the hubs and putting the caps back on.also remove the front propshaft. would it be safe to drive like that for a week or so until i get the parts i need to fix it properly? i think it would mean only 2 wheel drive but it should stop any further damage?

prop

hi ive taken off the propshaft.i took 3 bolts off either end and tried to spin the shaft to get at the others but it was locked solid even though both selectors were in neutral when i tried to spin it the front shafts looked like 4wd was engaged. its off now and it drives like a dream.does this mean the box, diff or prop could be at fault. i welcome any ideas as its really getting to me now thanks

front axle

If the front axle is all ok, everything working the way it should and the vehicle drives well with no power to the front diff then it will be the transfer box at fault, if you jack up the front of the vehicle, get the front wheels off the ground and turn the prop flange by hand where it goes into the diff and you cant turn it then its a case of stripping its guts to see whats what - process of ellimation, my guess is your front diff is knackered, if you have auto hubs its not quite as easy to work out whats happening as manuals, problem could also be cv joints, thats a common one for noise when in 4wd.....

End Float

Check the end float of the drive shafts, too much will push on the hubs and try to engage them. This will entail removing the wheels, hubs, and draining the front diff. Inside the diff, lever the driveshafts sideways, check the end float here, move to the outer CV joint where it passes through the front bearing, try to push this through, excess here will certainly try to engage the hubs.
Next will be to remove the driveshaft, strip the bearing inner and check for contamination or free play, metal shards in the bearing will give these symptoms.
