hi i've heard that the fourtrak has a problem with a nut undoing its self in the gear box and resulting in a loss of gears , most mechanics will tighten and weld a spot to hold it place , its a long job so might cost a bit but you won't need a new gear box

Tight Nuts

The Fourtrak does have a problem with the nut becoming loose and allowing the mainshaft to float excessively, it is an easy fix.

Jack the rear of the vehicle as high as you can, ramps are better, enter at the rear of the transfer case, and on the rear face is an aluminium cover plate which resembles a bra, at an angle of 45 degrees.
Remove the six retaining studs and remove, this will reveal two shafts, it is the upper left one which requires tightening. Use a six point 30mm socket, tighten as tight as you can; ensure you hammer the flange down well into the keyway to prevent it coming loose again. Avoid welding as it can distort the shaft and damage the bearing.

Clean the gasket faces and using GOOD quality gasket sealant, coat both surfaces and refit the cover.

Spot on. A Friend of mine

Spot on. A Friend of mine used to work for the local Daihatsu dealer. He reconed that at the time (mid ninties) they were doing one of these atleast every other week. He did mine (from driving onto 4 post ramp, to off again) in half an hour.
