Turbo Charger swap problem?

Forum:

I've just removed my old turbo from my daihatsu 2.8td DL-51 engine and was going to fit the replacement one but I noticed a difference. Both turbos say model RBH5 on the tag but the new one I brought has what looks like two extra ports on the side of the centre part. It looks like they might be for connecting to the water coolant system. Do I need to connect them to somewhere or can I just them them open?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Tim

Cannot remember which layout was used as there were variations.

If the unit is watercooled version, this needs watercooling as the heat generated will cause the unit to fail in a very short time, look inside the pipe entries for signs of brown water corrosion. If this is present, it is watercooled, suggest looking at another model for pipe layout.
Certain models had oil cooled variants fitted, but to the best of my knowledge these were not UK models.

When driving, as you pull up ensure you leave the engine ticking over for 30 seconds before switching off. Turbo's spin in excess of 100,000 RPM and take time to stop, much as an aircraft jet engine does. If you switch off with the turbo spinning it has no oil feed, this damages the bearings which cook the oil, this turns to a gum and builds up on the bearing surface. Over a short period this clogs the turbo to the point where it will not spin at all.

Does anyone happen to know

Does anyone happen to know where the coolant pipes usually connect to on the engine and what kind of fittings I would need to make it work.

Thanks

There is a fitting in the

There is a fitting in the back of the waterpump, and another in the rear of the block behind the turbo. Im pretty sure these are the fittings that the turbo hooks up to. I think it is hooked up in series with the oil cooler.
