Neutralised

N is for neutral, in simple terms it puts the transfer case into neutral while still maintaining the drive through the gearbox and into the transfer case.

Vehicles were sold with a range of options, these varied throughout the world, but the winch was the most common fitment across all markets. This allowed companies such as utility companies to have the engine powered winches fitted and working with a stationary vehicle. Many required the engine revs to be set to within a specific speed range to operate these accessories to provide adequate power to be available.
Most accessories were driven off the transfer case input shaft, this allowed the driver to select a gear and engine speed range to match the accessory, and in the case of winches, control them by using the clutch.
