Fourtrak only got rwd ?

Forum:

Hi I have searched through this site looking up the problems about 4x4 not selecting and have a few questions.

1, In previous posts about not being able to get four wheel drive your refer to checking vacuum pipe, solenoid, plunger, wiring this will be all checked tomorrow and could you tell me if you can put the jeep into permanent four wheel drive?

2. All the posts seem to refer to diesel fourtaks I have a 2.2 GX petrol, recently purchased to go off roading but has never worked in four wheel drive. Do all the above and other posts about the plunger apply to this fourtrak.

Cheers Andy

Oh does the 2.2 1993 GX have a light on the dash for four wheel drive??? and she has auto hubs that i belive can be a pian!!!! the jeep looks very well looked after thus everything is still working even the adjustable dampers, wing mirrors etc.

Hi. Ae you sure about the

Hi. Ae you sure about the engine size? Is it an import? Only ask becouse as fare as I'm aware the only petrol 4trak is the F80 / F85 2ltr 3Y engine. Is it an engine someone has put in them selves?
Any way the engine aside, if the 4x4 is opperated by a switch on the dash then it will be pipes selanoid and such as the rest of the car is the same. If 4x4 is selected by the transfure lever then there will be no extra gubins as the 4x4 on off is all controled inside the transfure box.
My first thing to check would be if the transfur is locking. Just standing on the drive etc, jack the front wheels off the ground. Then put it into 4x4. You should be able to turn the front prop no more than a quarter turn in either direction, as the rear wheels will be holding it firm (via the transfure). The prop may turn further than this at first until the splines lock in. If you put it in 2WD the prop should turn freely.
Not sure if the next bit works with auto hubs, but with manuals you'd lock them and make sure they don't turn when the transfur is in 4x4. I'm guessing the auto's will lock up if you try to rotat them with the 4x4 locked in. However I've not worked on auto's, so can't garentee.
It should have a 4x4 warning light on the dash, but these often don't work properly.
DO NOT use it in 4x4 on the road, of hard off road serfaces. The extra strain on the drive trais and stearing components will couse breakages eventually. 4x4's such as Range Rovers that use permanent 4x4 have a central diff in the transfure case to allow the front and rear wheels to rotat at diffrent speeds when cornering. This diff is then locked when off road, this has the same effect as puting a Daihats in 4x4. 50% power to each axle.
As you seem to be intendid to use it for off road playing only, then I belive that if it is a vaccum opperated type, you can swap the pipes over to get it into 4x4, and then leave it there.
Also as an off road only toy I would replace the auto hubs with manual ones asap. The auto's work by unlocking and re0locking every time you change direction. This means for a mo all drive goes to the rear wheels. If they start to spin there is a hell of a lot torque sudenly aplied to the front drive train when the hubs lock back up. This will break stuff!

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

gosh gosh gosh...

Thanks for your help checked loads of things today, Q does the 2nd box control the plunger that comes out of the trans and presses the selanoid that puts the light on the dash???? Also think sum1 has messed with the vacume pipes under the bonnet as one is not connected and the other goes into the drivers wing ??? I am new to this but already thinking about a manual box.

Yup had a look at the log look and she is a 2236cc 2.2 gx 1993, gutted it out for off roading today couldn’t sort 4x4 so ended up fabricating a leaver inside the car to manually push and pull the plunger that pushes the selaniod for the light on the dash lol, what a day will be taking it out tomorrow. Had her off the ground and was able to switch between rwd and 4x4 also had to adapt our leaver because it was popping out of 4x4 so it now has a holder to crazy but will post the outcome

Sounds like your getting

Sounds like your getting there. Out of intrest, what modle does it claim to be? In the middle of the chassis number there should be an F followed by numbers. The first 2 didgets should denote the type of car (engine, country of release).
Is yours an F80 or 85, as this was the 2ltr (original fitment) fourtrak sold in the UK. As fare as I know this was not supperseaded in the UK at least by a larger engine. Or is it something els entierly?
