Fuel Gauge Under Reads By 1/4 Tank

Forum:

I have a 1999 Fourtrak which currently under reads on the fuel gauge by about 1/4 tank. When fuel of any ammount is added the gauge reads correctly for the rest of the journey but when the car is started after standing overnight the fuel gauge drops 1/4 tank and then operates from that new level. Does anyone have any ideas as i don't want to have to drop the tank if it doesn't sound like a problem with the sender however, i can't think it could be much else?

Thanks for any help

Phil.

Fixed It

I have just fixed the above problem and thought i would post the solution incase anyone else searches on a similar problem in the future. The incorrect reading on the fuel gauge was down to a poor earth connection so all i did was remove the tank shield and then without disconnecting any pipes i supported the tank with a gearbox stand, removed the 6 bolts holding the tank and lowered the left, looking from the rear, side of the tank to gain access to the top of the sender unit, which i cleaned up, and also the spade connector just further down the wire which was badley corroded. Once the connector was cleaned everything was put back together and the fuel gauge now works a treat.
