hi just want to know witch is the better vehicle off road the sportrak or the fourtrak and why if someone could let me know that would be great cheers john

Depends on your requirements and specific needs for a vehicle used off road.

Sporties are lighter and offer slightly less traction than the Fourtrak, and only come with a relatively low powered petrol engine. Fourtraks come with a thumping diesel engine offering excellent torque for off road conditions. Fourtraks are more substantially built and offer considerably better fuel consumption off road, the sporty is little more than a lightweight version of the fourtrak.

It comes down to a choice of petrol versus diesel in this context, if considerable wet usage is envisaged it has to be the more durable diesel Fourtrak every time. Both vehicles are excellent in their own rights off road, and both respond well to modifications, simply changing tyres, slight suspension lifts, and underbody protection see them up there with the best. More modification and standard equipment is available for the Fourtrak, but many find this can be easily adapted for the Sporty.

Experience has taught me that diesel is better off road, its flat torque and resistance to wet conditions make it more favourable, its high towing weight and more substantial construction offer a more complete package, particularly when modifications take place. Its only real negative over the Sporty is the additional weight of the Fourtrak.

thanks for the info the reason i asked is because i have a sportrak and when i am offroading at old quarys i am sometimes struggling to get up the steeper hills and to get across the grass with it being wet and muddy and i was told if i was to change my sportrak for a fourtrak then i wouldnt have this problem anymore.
Is there anything i can do to my sporty to stop this happening but also being able to drive it on the road as it is my only transport many thanks john

What tyres are you using? The biggest diffrence anyone can make with little effort is tyre choice.

sportrak/fourtrak

hi i have got colway c-trax AT tyres on my sporty in a 225/70r15 these are what were on it when i brought it about a month ago.
If i was to change my tyres what would you recommend and would there be any need to change the size i was thinking of going a little bigger mabye 235/75r15 any knowledge you have on the matter will be greatly received

Same size BF Goodrich MT's, if you want longer lasting tyres, and arn't going to slash them to bits on flinty, rocky ground. Colway traker re-molds if you want cheaper aulternative. General grabber are als a good aulternative.

colway or bust

unfortunately colway are no longer in business which is annoying cos you cant get any greenway products now either, you can still find some old stock or use ebay though if you hunt about, avoid buying the colway mud terrain - money pit rubbish, get a really good tread for wet grass etc insa turbo or sahara or something, loads of stuff on the internet for all these things just google, any 4wd will spin like crazy on wet muddy grass cos its like driving on ice, its all down to gear selection, rev but most important - tyre choice and size....

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

I think all in all it comes down the driver, I have got a sporty and I can at times drive around the land rovers and hiluxs. But then deep river crossing can be a hassle in the lighter truck. I love my Sportrak and wouldn't trade it for a bigger truck. I'm running 30x9.5 Mud Terrains on mine, and while it does affect the gearing quite a lot you can anticipate this and pick a more suitable gear beforehand. Big tyres help with clearance diff to ground, which is what the sportys need in my opinion. The bigger the better! I've never broken anything... yet.

Tyres

As Nev says, it is down to the tyres, vehicle type would be virtually negligible, the preferred option would be to obtain another set of secondhand steel rims and fit better tyres.

Fit a good set of mud terrain tyres, not all terrain or M+S (mud and slush) as these are both more road orientated, types of tyre depend on your budget. many good cheap remoulds are available, and more expensive new tyres are also available. Simply change your wheels when off roading, this will allow the flexibility of good road tyres when working on road, and good traction when off roading. Fitting larger tyres is not recommended, this increases the overall gearing giving rise to other problems. Increasing the gearing will hamper your limited power output when hill climbing, narrower tyres will allow more bite into the grass, thus more traction.
