f85 fourtrak 2.0 ltr petrol running probs

Forum:

Hi all,

I have a 1990 f85 2.0 ltr petrol fourtrak with running probs. it starts fine from cold and will sit there ticking over for ages, but if i drive it for 3 or 4 miles it loses all power, coughs, spits and backfires. The points, dizzy cap and rotor arm have been changed. I have been told it could be the coil overheating and to check the ballast resistor. Does anyone know the voltages of the ballast resistor so i can check it is working correctly.
Many thanks
Terry

Sure it's not fuel? Sounds

Sure it's not fuel? Sounds very much like what mine used to do. Turned out to be particals of rubber getting into the carbretour flot chainber, and beoing sucked over the outlet. Had to unscrew the top of the carb and clean out the flote chamber. This happened about 3 times in the course of a year. Never did find where the rubber was originating from.
There is also a 'wire wool' filter in the inlet to the carb. Undo the fule line from the carb. The fillter is just pushed up in the carb itself. Just dig it out, and clean up.
Worth a look?

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
