4wd problems

Forum:

hi there all new to this site and four wheel drives
ive just got myself a 1991 fourtrak 2.8 diesel swb the van type
i was up at a friends farm the other day and was wanting to have a bit of fun in the mud, so i turned the hubs to the lock position, jumped in then moved the smaller gear stick back to the 4wd position but nothing happened (no light on the dash either) i just had the rear wheels spinning
is there any easy checks to do Unknw
or any common hopefully easy fixes that i could perform
also i heard of there being a switch on the dash for the 4wd but cant see one may just be my stupidity but any help will greatly appreciated
many thanks weeeginge

Also try the site serch, as there are several threads about this type of problem.
Don't worry about the 4x4 switch. Some modles had it, others had the manual transfur lever opperated 4x4. As you said you used the lever to put it into 4x4 I sermise yours will not have the switch.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

hi again got stuck in about

hi again
got stuck in about it this weekend
locked the front hubs, put it in fwd, then jacked up a front wheel it spun freely which in turn spun the shaft heading back to the transfer box could this be a knacked transfer box or is there more checks i could do, ive read in previous posts about a plunger inside the box which activates the 4wd how do i get to and check this
also one more thing
how do i select 4wd high there is no switch on the dash (that i can see)and my lever just goes from 2H-N-4L theres a diagram on the drivers door that says the lever pushes to one side then back again to select 4H but it doesnt
any help will be greatly appreciated
sorry if these are newbie questions but i cant find any one on the search function that has had the same probs
thanks again

Sounds from you description

Sounds from you description like a previous owner has put a later transfur box into an earlier car. Is there an after market switch anywhere, with no explanation? Could be that they didn't want it as anything other than a car, and didn't conect it up? Afraid I've never worked on a switch opperated transfur, as all mine have been older types. However I belive the 4H function is opperated by a selonoid. Is there one on the transfur with no wiering attached? Or if there is wiering, where does it go to?

i'll have to wait till this

i'll have to wait till this weekend again due to work commitments i just thought it was something simple like someone had changed the drivers door at some point with the wrong instructions on it as it seems to go into 4L but only 2 wheel drive(rear)
i cant seem to find a switch for it but at the weekend i can remember seeing a blue multiplug just hanging above the transfer box not doing anything and also a white one with something plugged in, but cant recall any solenoids
many thanks for taking time to try help me out
weeeginge
how hard would it be to change it back to the old style manual lever box would it work and does anyone know a step by step guide how to do it cheers
