LPG/Diesel Kit

Forum:

Hey people,

I've come across this articles about fitting an LPG kit on turbo diesel engines. Seems to increase HorsePower and gas mileage, along with other benefits (cleaner emissions, engine...). Kit is installed as to inject 15/20% LPG into combustion chamber along with regular diesel. Not a full LPG conversion like gasoline engines. Has anybody performed that kind of installation on a 4Trak?
Think it's pretty interesting.....
You?

I looked into this a year or 2 ago. I was assured by a company that caries out this conversion that unless I had a truck which was brand new, and I was intending to keep it for 200,000 miles or more, it was not worth the cost of doing it.
Add to that the 'protected perioud' of LPG price has ended, and the tax will inevitably go up, I deccided against the idea.
Up to you.

Conversions

In simple terms these conversions do not work, are unreliable, and will easily ruin a perfectly good engine and cost you a lot of money in the process. One of the professional engineering bodies to which i belong; part sponsored such a system in 2006, the funding was pulled as the system could not be made to work by the worlds best engine specialists, designers, and manufacturers.
Reasons are too complex to go into on such a forum as they would go over most peoples heads, but if the worlds best cannot make such a system work, it speaks for itself really.

LPG KIt

:-)

I have looked into doing this and there are lots of issues. It works on some vehicles as I have seen it. Albeit I would recommend getting a capable Deisel mechanic that knows his stuff to tune the engine, injectors and injector pump.

I had mine done, as I am an old petrol head from way back but never worked on diesel engines. My Rocky has 220,00 ks on clock, I had done just before I went for a roughly 3,000 km trip with my partner across to South Australia into the Gammon Ranges towing a 17 ft pop top. I returned between 23 and 26 mpg, which I was more than pleased with. And sitting on 80klm hr with van in tow effortlessly, the only issue I had was a blown p/s hose on way back to Victoria.

This went in Clare as we stopped in on a winery, I had a 2' lift and suspension upgrade before we left. And I put it down to the hose being too short and not made properly, all I had to do luckily was remove the P/S belt and drive home.

Had a new hose made and lengthened, and made by a guy who also owned a rocky he says it will never give me trouble. Only issue I have is new parts are getting hard to come by here in Australia, since Toyota took over. I may reluctantly have to upgrade to another later model 4WD. I love the Rocky as I can go anywhere, and it is easy to get in and out of tight places, and even shopping centers as I use the Rocky everyday.

The Rock always seems happiest when I am towing my trailer, as I do maintenance and Hort works so I can keep traveling across Aus.

Never to old to play in the mud :-)
