fourtrak (pipe) ?

Forum:

hi guys,

I need some help identifying a pipe on my f78 turbo diesel.
Whilst underneath replacing the fuel pipes i noticed a pipe about the same size as a brake pipe coming out of the rear axle and going into the rear tubular cross member.
this pipe is also corroded so will need replacing.
what does this pipe do ?.

Thanks Frank.

pipe

The pipe is an axel breather. When you drive the differential heats up expanding the air inside the axel, the breather allows the air to expand without stressing oil seals. The same goes when you have been driving and go through a deep puddle or ford and the water rapidly cools the drive train causing the air in the axel and dirrerential to contract drawing in air through the breather pipe. If the breather weren't there the air would contract and create a vacuum inside the axel potentially sucking in water through the driveshaft seals when you go through deep water. So its not essential but a very good thing to have just in case!! So get it fixed.
