Hi All, i just bought a fourtrak with a noisy diff (supposed to be) but i'm thinking more like gearbox!?
it does make a loud whine when going 50-60mph but seems to come from the front centre area not the rear! and if you put the clutch in or coast then it stops! i thought if diff/axle then it would be still making a noise
if the gearbox how do i check the oil on these? is there a seperate dip stick? or just a plug in the side you fill to this level or is it through the gearstick??
does the tranfer box (if it has one) have a seperate oil tank or does it share the gearbox's oil? if seperate how do you check this level?
i dont think anything wrong with clutch or thrust bearing as no noise stationery with clutch engaged or out!
sorry for all questions just bought tonight and hoping to have a better look at it tomorrow.
thanks
The gearbox has a level
The gearbox has a level plug, take it out, if it drips out, its ok. If not, you need to top it up. It does have a transfer box, and it has a separate level plug. I would check the 2 axles levels at the same time. I wouldn't have thought it was through lack of oil you're getting the noise though :S
HI, Thanks for that i will
HI, Thanks for that i will have a try tomorrow and see the levels in each! i think the noise will be cogs or bearings, even maybe thrust bearing! just wanted to try and make quieter and also make sure not bone dry or will get worse much quicker
Diffs would still get
Diffs would still get quieter when coasting, as strain or drive removed.
Be carful when serching for gearbox oil bung. I belive the revurse retainer looks like one, and if undun requires a lot of digging about inside the box in order to rectify.
If thrust baring the noise would go with putting clutch up and down, regardless of road speed. Even at stationary.
You can get an additive for gear oil which teflon or nylon coats the inside of the box / diff. This can do wonders for noise level and longjevity.
I had an F50 with a knackered rear diff. I didn't have a replacment so just added coating and kept driving. Once got new diff decided to see just how long the failing diff would last. 3 yeard later I wrote the jeep off. I sold the 'replacment' diff a yaer of 2 after that.

Ah, well said poster! I
Ah, well said poster! I forgot to say about the reverse bolt, its near the top of the box on the near side, mine has a metal washer around the bolt which is bent over the edges of the bolt. I had to have my box out(worn selectors), its easy to do, but the damn thing is very heavy!(Due to transfer box).
