When I switch out of 4wd either using the low box or the 4wd button it does not drop out straight away and releases itself with a bang/shudder further down the road.
Its a 2001 fourtrak, 40k, with auto hubs on the front, serviced by myself from new, and the xmission/hubs have never been touched.
Any idea how to fix this , or what i can service

A - sometimes, when in high box only, low speed though under 20mph

A- no have never tried this, usually have trailer/box on , will give it a try
Also a guy today suggested i try revving the engine harder when changing , any idea if this will help

I have a factory fitted
I have a factory fitted sticker on the door of my sporty that tells you to reverse for a couple of meters to disengage 4wd. Guess it must be the norm.

how far have you driven on the road in 4wd? perhaps the transmission has wound up , the torque locking the transfer box 4wd gears together even though they arnt held in by the selector mechanism,, till they suddenly release themselves
try going in and out of 4wd on grass without a trailer on to see if it goes smoothly then. if it does try changing to 2wd as soon an you hit the hard road.

I usually get 100 yards on the road before the 4wd drops out. I tried reversing tonight without a trailer and the 4wd dropped out, will try off road, with without a trailer this weekend

Found that reversing after coming out of 4WD either from low box or high 4wd makes the front wheels drop out smoothly - problem solved - thanks

Assuming auto hubs you must reverse the car to disengage them. If you don't then you will wind up the diffs.
