No speedo reading

Forum:

'92 Fourtrak 2.8 TDX

Hi all.
I have a speedo problem. No reading on speedo.

Removed outer cable from gearbox drive end, pulled out the inner drive cable from speedo, all in one piece, no kinks ,well oiled, replaced twisting to lock it into the speedo drive, connected up cordless drill and got 40mph reading and a few extra miles. So take it speedo dial and cable okay.

Reading a previous post from Bundyrumandcoke,he refers to the alloy housing on the rear of the (where the speedo drive attaches)transfer box ,this contains a plastic drive gear, any one replaced this item, can you even purchase one, any suggestions ?????.

Edward.

re previous post, looking on

re previous post, looking on the service CD,I see the 'speedometer shaft sleeve' which houses this plastic gearwheel seems to located with a single bolt. Any one know if this assembly is complete with gearwheel/driveshaft whatever,ie- can one unbolt, pull and remove the whole shebang. without removing the prop and tailshaft housing. Assuming you cannot purchase one new, any one got one for sale ????, 'cause thats where it seems the problem may lie.

Added to post .

Removed the 'speedometer shaft sleeve'. Removed bolt and locking tab, twisted and pulled the sleeve free , the nylon/plastic driven gear cream crackered, teeth worn almost away.(unit well lubricated and free to spin) The gearwheel is attached to a shaft which protrudes through the housing and just slides out, this drives the speedo cable via a slot into which the inner speedo cable/shaft fits.

Wonder what the chances of a dealer having one of these plastic/nylon jobbies, Its called 'Speedometer Driven Gear' ?????.

re previous posting

Can any one help with a replacement 'Driven Gear' or a whole complete 'Speedometer Shaft Sleeve' for a '92 Fourtrak 2.8 TDX with the 5 speed box, with some life left in nylon driven gear.

PM me if you can help.

New Teeth

Hi All.

Like to give a plug for the guy who came up with the little nylon 'driven gear' , this is the the gear wheel/shaft which takes the drive off the gearbox output shaft to the speedo cable. Give him a shout for 2nd user Fourtrak parts.

Addition

While looking localy for the part, I was offered the part off three gearboxs, the gearwheel on each was stripped, in one case down to the shaft.this seemed to be due to the gearbox output shaft bearings ( to the front and rear axle) being worn allowing the output shafts to move around and wearing the nylon driven gear away. Strangely I can find no play, movement or oil leak in the output shafts on my Fourtrak !!!!!!

Lost Teeth

Now it is removed it will be a simple case of matching one, these are pretty standard sizes as the speedo is internally altered to the correct ratio. Suggest a Toyota dealer, these may have a spare on the shelf to make a comparison with, if not try Equicar for a breaker.
