Clutch slipped but now doesn't...

Forum:

Hi All,
Sorry for recent post on similar topic, but let me explain:
I was at the end of a three hour drive the other day going uphill (the one from dover docks) in 4th, and the clutch slipped (engine revving, vehicle slowing). I tried this several times just to make sure and every time it was slipping, but no problem in 3rd. So I assumed my clutch was done (158k miles) hence previous post on replacement.
Now I just got in the vehicle and put it in 5th with the handbrake on, but instead of slipping it stalled the engine. I tried this several times in 5th and 4th, and it didn't slip once.

So what gives? Anyone have any experience of this? One thing I did do after the slipping was to remove the slack off the clutch cable (using the circlip under the bonnet). I assumed this had developed due to the clutch wear, and I can't see how this would stop the clutch slipping - surely if anything a tighter cable would cause there to be slightly less contact?

Any ideas appreciated.

Cheers,

Lube

Two ideas. 1) Could it be

Two ideas.
1) Could it be that the 'hot' clutch was slipping slightly as warmer parts may couse faliure (due to swelling prehaps). Still points towards needing a new clutch.
2) Another idea is that you have a slight leak of oil from the crank seal. This can cause oil to get onto the clutch biting surface. Again, warmer = slipperier.

Both these ideas would require the bell housing to be opened up to have a look.

By the way, were you going up Jubilee way becouse you live around the Dover area, or were you just passing through? Only ask as I'm based just outside Dover myself.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing myself. I checked last night and there was some engine oil around the edge of bell housing, but it appeared to be coming from an oil connection underneath the turbo as opposed to coming out of the bell housing itself. However I suppose it's possible that some of this oil got onto the clutch?
This time I was just passing through for the ferry, however I occasionally visit as I have friends around there.
Cheers.
