fourtrak 2.8 rear suspension

Forum:

Hi everyone

Can anyone tell me what the distance between the centre of the rear wheel hub to the edge of the wheel arch should measure on a 1999 Independant 2.8 TDX as I don't know if mine seems low on the back end? It keeps bottoming out when towing and wonder if I need new springs or dampers

Any help would be appreciated

Cheers

Can't give you an actual

Can't give you an actual mesurment, but the Indipendent normaly sits 'nose down'. Ie there is more gap between the top of the rear wheel and the arc, than the same mesurment at the front. You can see the amount of dip on the front end quite clearly.
So if yours is siting rear down, it definetly needs something replacing. Prob springs.
Unless some previous owner has adjusted the front suspention upwards? It would have to be very upwards to make the rear seem low. But going on the suspention bottoming out as well, I would guess at new rear springs being in order.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Thanks Nev it does seem to

Thanks Nev it does seem to sit low at the rear, measured each side of the rear and seems to be 2" difference from side to side as well. So think you are right with the springs, rang Milners today to order but no stock 'til 2 weeks time, do you know of anywhere else I could get hold of some as usually use Milners due to their reasonable prices? Could do with getting some for weekend to get sorted before next caravan holiday !

Many thanks for your help,

John

you could try a search for

you could try a search for coil springs in the car section on ebay. even if fourtrak ones arnt listed you should find a couple of suppliers who may respond to an email.

Coiled

John:

Check the bottom and tops of your springs, they have a tendency to snap the ends off the coils, tou will se it if this has happened.
