bearings, collars and axels

Hi guys and gals. I'm having problems with the collars on my rear axels. They keep coming loose after about 6 months. I normally just whack em on when I get new ones, but I was told the other day I should heat them, slide them on the axels, then cool/shrink them on. Anyone know anything about this before I put the next set on?

Cheers bundy... Next question then is...can I heat/shrink the collar that's there now, or will I need to replace it with a new one? Bearing and seal seem to be okay still.

My inclination would be to get yourself a new pair of retainer collars...new ones simply wont slip all the way along the shafts until heated or pressed on.
They are very cheap and you will be able to have complete confidence in them knowing they are brand spanking new ones.

NP m8....just a thought..just

NP m8....just a thought..just make sure that the bearings are in tip top condition before fitting new collars...it would be daft to go to all the trouble of fitting new collars only to have the bearings go on you and have to do the whole thing again...if the bearings are elderly I would be inclined to change them as well...yeh I know its all money aint it ...:)

Cheers Mike. I'll make sure to check out the bearings and seals again. It isn't one of my favourite jobs on the truck, mainly because of the fiddly spring setup in the brake drums.
