YRV Turbo

Forum:

Newbie here, I just bought a 100000km YRV Turbo for the wife. It's in good shape, the car, not the wife. I drove it hard for about 5 or 6kms and felt the intercooler, it was hot, not like my Civic's front mount. So I did a little test, ice on the intercooler and go again, WOW, this car could actually be fun. I've made some measurements and we are building a new top mount for now. Will post some pics when it's done.

Hi There, Yes a fun

Hi There,

Yes a fun car indeed! Smile but I would also look at the following if you want the best out of it:

- Better upgraded brakes to help with stopping with the uprated intercooler

- Wider tyres, as the standard 175/55/R15 tyres are rubbish in my opinion

- Lowering springs (The Tein lowering kit is very good)

- A better breathable exhaust (Although you may need a remap due to the ECU compensating for overboost from the turbo)

Have heard that remaps are possible away from the U.K or you may need to look at a piggy back alternative to get the most from the mods.

Have fun Wink

Thanks jpor, I have done a CAI (Cold air intake) and the Unichip is on order. We have some very good tuners here in SA. My Civic 1.5 running 0.8bar made 180wkw at our Johannesburg altitude.
The car has 195/50/15 tyres on, but the brakes can't cope, so I have to look at a VARI Racing upgrade. Thanks again

I have looked around the

I have looked around the net, but the YRV is just another turbo charged car, so any mod that works on any car should work on it. My next mod after the intercooler is the exhaust and then the UNICHIP for tuning. Getting the intercooler in 4-5days, so I'm excited about feeling the results. I'm lucky as I work for a company that does loads of modded cars, check out our latest project, a BMW E92 M3 supercharged.

I have installed Unichip Q+

I have installed Unichip Q+ too and using turbo boost @ 1.2Bar. I also a full turbo-back exhaust and an intake system... Now working with cams to improve and I also bought a CO2 for my top mount intercooler from DEI. Thinking of putting a front moun but I'm afraid of the lag. I'm also about to buy a Garret GT2554R withing the holidays since this is the smallest ball bearing turbo in the world ans is suitable for our ride (of course I will reduce boost @ 1.0 bar). Some friens in Singapore even use GT28 with @0.8bar and produce 240 WHP Biggrin

Thanks for the update to the work you are doing. How does the car perform with the Unichip? As for the front mount, I would have got this fitted first before the unichip, that way it could have been custom mapped for it I would imagine. The bigger turbo will give a bit of lag, but can you not have a map for anti-lag on the unichip?
Am very envious to what you can do to these cars where you are Smile

The car is going really

The car is going really nice.... but above 6000rpm you need a bigger turbo... I work at 1.3 bar overboost and 1.1 bar constat pressure... the front mount is not neccassary yet since I DO monitor the intake temperature with my OBDII and is usually below 25-30C so it;s ok... even ins summer is never above 55-60C.... imagive that some starlet turbo used to have 70-90C intake air temperature... anyway I alkready have bough DEI CRYO but I may not install it befor the fron mount I/C. will see.

I don't mind at all, they

I don't mind at all, they are in SA though. The filter used is a BMC, the rest of the intake I made up myself from bits I had lying around. The intercooler was fitted on Saturday, it's 2.5 times the size of stock and LESS restrictive, losing only 0.08bar. And now it flies , but I still have to add ducting etc to keep it cooler in slow moving situations. The cooler was made to spec by MRP (Mark Rowntree Performance Products) I will take the car to TNT performance exhaust systems for a full exhaust and downpipe. Tuning with the DASTEK Unichip Q will be done at RGM, where I work.

Looking Good Smile A couple of questions though, now that you are using a bigger intercooler are you planning on using a bigger Intercooler scoop on the bonnet/hood? Why not have the intercooler front mounted?

Keep us posted on your progress Wink

That cooler looks good! I wanted to do it too, might still do it but water/meth works very nicely on these cars. Where you in JHB? I have a home made CO2 system on the cooler now too, only use it for drags to get rid of the heatsoak while standing in the line!

I take it that is the same as an Intercooler waterspray of sorts?
How's it work? Does it activate when the car goes on boost?

nah this is a very basic system, I switch it on manually for 5 seconds just before I do a 1/4mile run, it helps with heatsoak, the water/meth injection does the cooling at the top,it actually freezes the cooler.

If there is a bigger scoop

If there is a bigger scoop available, let me know. I didn't want a huge ft mount, but I will be trying to get more cold air onto the new cooler.

Haven't come across a bigger

Haven't come across a bigger scoop for the YRV turbo I'm afraid. The only thing I can think off is to buy a Subaru Impreza STi MY03-05 bonnet scoop and bespoke fit it onto the bonnet/hood. May mean having to cut out a bigger hole though Sad I have noticed that front mounts are more preferred due to the issue of heat. I take it that moving the intercooler my 90 degrees so that you can make the full use of the scoop opening? Or is that not possible?

I did try to go bigger and

I did try to go bigger and thought about turning it through 90degrees, but then I would have to remove the cooler everytime I changed the plugs. So for now, this option will have to do but I will be looking at adding ducts and maybe a fan.

Yip, in JHB. I am going to try the fan route first to see, but never had the car on a dyno before, so I would hope to FEEL an improvement. I like your setup, but we measured boost drop through that standard cooler and there was virtually none. No drop means no air is slowed, and that means no heat is lost from the air. You will SMILE when you feel the difference. I had an issue with my gearbox, it shifted harsh, but I flushed it with cheap ATF and then put in Castrol Transmaz Z and it as smooth as a new one? You had any issues?
