Fourtrak horn

Forum:

Hi. I bought some dual tone electric horns(x2) for my 1990 2.8 F70 Fourtrak. I want to use them to replace the stock horn. The stock horn works fine. So I connect the 2 new horns in parallel and.....nothing happens. I can connect one wire and earth them to the chassis and they work, I can't see a reason why they won't work on the switch, I have power to the horns and the switch works with the stock horn.

Can someone please help me figure this out?

Thanks.

Problems With His Horn

Not a problem i would advertise as many will suggest Viagra, joking apart it could be the way your horns are wired.
Some Daihatsu models have a permanent live to the horn, the earth is switched through the horn switch, you will need to check this. If you have a permanent live then connect it to the live of your air horns, this should work.

Wiring in series means the horns are only getting 6V each instead of the full 12V, so it is not enough to operate them.

Mistake

When I said series, I mean't to type parallel, =/ Also, they are not air horns, just dual tone(2 horns) electric.

Thanks.

Have you tried just pluging

Have you tried just pluging the existing wiering into the new horns only? Do they work on there own? Have you pluged the wires in the right way around? Just a couple of thoughts...

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

I plugged in one of the new

I plugged in one of the new horns on its own and both in together and no success. I have tried the wires in all possible ways. I guess I will have to try a relay or wire them in on there own system with a dash switch.....

Duel tones.

Just be aware that dual tone horns which give two distinct tones, are illegal. Such horns were banned several years ago. Police will stop and issue prosecution. Such hornes were banned because they sound similar to police/fire/ambulance sirens.
MOT will also fail on dual horns - not compliant with motor regulations.

Do what i did once, one of

Do what i did once, one of my old ones had a poor horn so i borrowed one of the spares from a locomotive, this was one of the rare 12v items. This shocked a few people the first time they heard it, particularly when sitting at level crossings, it provided many laughs.
