i have bought a YRV 4WD - 1.3i - EFI - DVVT - petrol
some weeks ago and would like your help regarding its rear suspension.
it seems quite hard indeed!! car has 53000 km and it is an oct 04 model! its condition seems more or less almost perfect and so far during this short period i have enjoyed its economy, power and climbing abilities....
rear passengers in the bad country roads of corfu are strongly complaining for the common "jumping" that their stomach, head and especially back is facing!
transverse abnormalities are "awfully" filtered by the rear absorbers.
your help and feedback will be highly appreciated!
YRV 4-wheel drive rear suspension
I have a 2-wheel drive YRV and had to fit stronger springs to prevent suspension bottoming. At least one club member, BobF, has had to fit stronger springs to his 4-wheel drive Sirion - very similar if not identical suspension to your car.
Passengers in the rear of my car say it is very hard now. However you have to be sure what the real problem is. It could be that your suspension is actually too soft! The problem then is that when hitting a significant bump the suspension bottoms against the stiff rubber snubbers and that feels very very hard indeed! If the car rides nicely on small bumps then that's likely to be your problem and BobF can give you the answer.

actually i tried several times and pushed the rear suspension my end and is seems really hard! it does not appear to perform bottoming. at least with no sound to escort this phenomenon!
when trying, i have to put a lot of force with both of my hands and to press it downwards and it immy comes up quickly! very little absorbion!
you have a point but it seems quite strange to me the fact that if i put stronger springs the problem will be eased???!!!...i thought that it will be better to put softer ones...
car is apparently still with its initial suspension (OE) for the 53k kms that it has and as per one check that i have made recently at one service company it functions for about 70%.

Rear Suspension
You won't be able to determine your car's suspension characteristics by trying to compress it by hand.
Try putting a couple of heavy passengers in the back and driving over some humps in the road (don't do this test by driving over potholes as this could damage your tyres etc). The suspension will initially compress and you may get bottoming (a very hard thump) then. The car will then feel as if it's floating momentarily and when it hits the ground again the suspension will compress and may bottom with a hard thump again. If it does that your springs are too weak for the load.
To prove or not that your suspension is bottoming to give the hard feel, stick a piece of chewed chewing gum to the end of the rubber snubbers and see after your tests if it has been flattened!
Don't worry about your dampers. Daihatsu use quality dampers and at 53k kms they will be as good as new (unless they are leaking).
It is very difficult to design suspension for a light car, where the load carried can vary as a large percentage of the unloaded car's weight. With a heavy car it's easier because large load changes are less of a percentage of the unloaded car's weight. I think Daihatsu have a tendency with their small cars to have softer rather than stiffer springs to help comfort.
If your car's suspension is genuinely too hard it may be that a previous owner has fitted stiffer springs to improve handling. I would have thought that the OEM springs are very unlikely to be too hard.

Interesting that your YRV
Interesting that your YRV 4Trak is currently experiencing. I too have people complaining that it's too bumpy in the back of my YRV turbo (2wd) yet the only thing I have done which to me improves the handling is have Tein lowering springs fitted, even though Daihatsu purposly tried to stiffen the suspension set-up on the turbo
when they sold it 
A lot of reviewers especislly journalists commented how boncy the suspension was at the back when they first test drove the turbo here in the U.K 
Apparrently the U.K turbo suspension was developed here in the U.K for U.K roads.
I am just wondering the Daihatsu's that are sold in other countries may have differing suspension set-ups to ours
. I know Daihatsu for example sold a 4wd version of the YRV turbo in Japan for a short period, maybe they kept the suspension and added it to the 4Trak and had them imported. The only other thing I can think of is that the previous owner has tweaked the suspension. What colour are your springs? Normally Teins or aftermarket ones are coloured in Green/Blue/Yellow or red. The standard Daihatsu springs are normally coloured black.

YRV Turbo rear suspension
Several people have said what jpor has said here about the suspension of the YRV Turbo...that it was specially developed. In fact I believe the Turbo has the same suspension all-round as does the standard YRV, except for the addition of an anti-roll bar.
Trevor Levy who fitted a Turbo anti-roll bar to my standard YRV and who had developed the UK mods for the Turbo implied as much and it was confirmed by John Oldershaw, the then Technical Manager of Daihatsu UK.
Rear seat ride in any car, particularly a small car, is never going to be particularly comfortable as the passengers more or less sit directly above the rear axle and feel the full movement of the car body at that point. Front seat occupants are about mid-way between the two axles and thus only experience about half of the body movement occuring at each axle.
I'm Afraid we've drifted off your problem a bit YRV 4WD....it often happens in the Forum!

good morning and thanks to all for your interest!
i have just checked it and it has the oe/standard i think black excel g series from kayaba. also springs are black ones, so apparently also oe!
to the best of my knowledge they are considered to be soft somehow.....but not in my car.
another maybe crucial thing i have to mention is tires. particular model comes with 165/65r14 or 175/60r14 depending on the version.
previous owner has changed them (MAYBE BECAUSE 175/60R14 ARE MORE EXPENSINVE) to 175/65r14 (and also the rims, as it now has aftermarket MIM alloy wheels).
when i bought it, it had on, winter ones (gislaved nord frost 3) at good condition (which i kept for after autumn use).
for slight off road experience i have put bri dueller a/t d693 ii (the ones that panda 4x4 has) 165/70r14, which is much harder than the soft winter ones (although with more profile).
after that have spotted the difference but have never put passengers behind with the gislaved on! so i really do not know.
was thinking also to reduce the air from 30 to 28 but the guy here (tires' technician) to my job (i worked for an import tires' company here in corfu) told me that this is not such a good idea, especially in summer. anyway will try to do this
as we are mainly moving me and my wife and some things in the luggage room.
