Deisel problems

Forum:

Hi everyone newbie here, any advice will be much appreciated, have just bought my 3rd daihatsu fourtrak with the knowlage that when she reaches 2000 revs she starts to judder and cut out. Have checked all pipes and put airline through, that didn't solve it. Run a seperate pipe from the primer down the neck of the tank then she ran ok. so run new line from the primer straight to the tank, but still kept pulling the primer down and starving the deisel, have changed the fuel filter taken the tank off twice and checked, am loosing the will now as it's my 5th day off trying, any advice will be grately recived, thanks, rob.

Fueled

Remove the tank sender unit, this consists of the fuel tank sender, pick up pipe and strainer.

Check the strainer for damage, these often split over time and as suction is applied it pulls part of it over the end of the pick up pipe, thus restricting fuel. Check the pick up pipe for damage or corrosion, these often corrode over time and become full of pin holes, no problem with a full tank, but as the fuel drops it sucks up more air.

Check the tank for contamination, large particles may also cause a similar problem, and also check the tank breather is operating correctly.

not always

Depends on the model type as to where the pick up pipes etc are in the tank.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Is the bottom of the tank

Is the bottom of the tank dented? I had one which was, and when the engine started to pull hard it would suck the tank itself onto the end of the pickup pipe.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Fuel supply

Just a thought, 2000 rpm . The turbo kicks in at around 2200 rpm, try checking for air leaks on the commpresion side of the turbo, as well as fuel starvation, and a clogged air filter, blockage in the tank outlet, not sure if there is a filter on the tank oulet. Rig up the fuel supply (and return ) to filter from 25 litre drum , if alls okay problem must lie within the fuel tank pick up, asumming you have replaced the pipe work to the tank.
