Fourtrak turbo behaviour

Forum:

Hi

Just got our second fourtrak, 1998(R)TDX, nice car but in 3rd gear going up hills the turbo seems to lose power drastically, which means having to change down into second and then pushing the revs up until can change into 3rd again, otherwise it seems OK, I know this is not right as our other fourtrak, 1997(R) Fieldman, does not exhibit the same problem on the same hills, I'm no mechanic but don't won't to change the turbos over as I'm trying to keep the Fieldman running properly so I can think about selling it (probably try to keep it for spares if my other half agrees).

Any suggestions would be apreciated.

Have you changed the fuel

Have you changed the fuel filter. If this is partually blocked, the engine could be suffering from fuel starvation.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Thanks Nev

Car is booked in for a service in a couple of weeks, so will see what happens then when the fuel filter gets changed. Thanks again.

Anyone with any other suggestions, please let met know.

Turbo

Turbo should kick in at approx 2200 RPM,and she should pull like a train, also check for air leaks/splits/loose jubblie clips between turbo , intercooler( possible damage) and inlet manifold, as well as fuel filter blockage. (air is under compression when it leaves the turbo thus finding the easy way out)

curious rpm

Hi, i just wondered what rpm it is doing before you have to kik down going up a hill, i would check your fuel system 100% before going down the turbo route, put an airline down the tubes etc.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

rpm

Hi

Thanks for your reply about rpm, took it out today and it seems to be kicking in around 2200, which appears to be about right, will get the fuel system checked over (hopefully) next week, then decide to go down the turbo and intercooler route - buy the way, what is the best method for testing the intercooler.

Thanks in advance.

one thing about intercooler

A thought did occur to me, look for any slit/cracked pipe work for the air on the turbo/intercooler side, this WILL result in loss of power.
