ELECTRICAL FAULT. HELP!

Forum:

I have an electrical fault on my F75 RH drive which I cannot fathom out, any help or ideas much appreciated. The basic symptoms are:
1. Intermittent.
2. Both charge and fuel drain lights illuminate, indicated voltage fluctuates on meter and radio powers on and off.
3. Water temperature on meter indicates overheating within a few miles although water temperature does not physically feel hot. Could be un unrelated problem but occurred at the same time as the electical fault.
4. When indicating the volt neter fluctuates in sympathy by a couple of volts.
5. When the warning lamps are illuminated the wiper speed drops and the electric windows are very slow in closing.
6. Occasionally when I brake/stop I can hear relays clicking in and out. These appear to be nearside in the vicinity of the passenger seat.
7. All the affected circuits are, I think, associated with the 7.5 Amp gauge fused circuit.

My initial thoughts were faulty earth, but where or problem with voltage reg, but I have no difficulty starting. Other thoughts were with the lighting stalk because occasionally the affected warning lamps illuminate when I switch on headlights and obviously indicators affect indicated voltage. Cannot work out how that can affect fuel drain lamp or water temp gauge.

As I am going round in circles more wiser minds would be appreciated.

Phil

Just a suggestion , have you had the alternator tested, as these can give problems when worn. I belive there have been other posts re the charge and fuel drain light and its been due to the alternator. As for the lighting stalk a I solved a problem by spraying WD40 into the area and giving it a work out. ( lossed all lights when using the switch to change from dip to main or back and had to franticly work the switch to get the light back).

addition- been reading some previous post's and would also like to suggest the Votage Regulator may be at fault.

Hope this helps.

Random instruments!

My F70 suffers from intermittent instrument cluster voltage regulator failure - when it occurs both the fuel and temperature gauges go right off the full and hot ends (mine does NOT have a voltage meter).

When I've gone through water causing the alternator to drop output, I've noticed that both the charge and fuel lights illuminate.

With the engine running and the alternator charging the battery voltage should be around 14v or so.

Agree strongly with above.

Agree strongly with above. Most likely suspect is aulternator. As for fuel drain light, yes it usually comes on with low voltage light. Don't ask why, it's Jap crap... These are fantastic cars, however the one complaint I do have is the unfathomably complicated electronics. Why use one wir and a switch, when you can use 7 wire, 2 relays and a resister or 3? And then just for good mesure cross wir it into about 3 other components, so when one goes wrong, they all do...
Sorry. Rant over.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

MY ELECTRICAL FAULT

Just another thought. As I have said the water temp meter goes to full sale after a couple of miles driving, but tends to back off a bit whilst idling at traffic lights, I expected it to show hotter as there was no air cooling, however I have noticed a slight water leak in the footwell presumably from the heater matrix or supply/return pipes. Could the electrical problems be related? The intermittent fuel drain and charge lights are less intermittent, more eratic in nature really.

Any further thoughts much appreciated. The replies I have had have given me food for thought and as suggested I have looked at the past posts re these faults which seem to indicae alternator brushes. Many thanks.

I have an almost identical problem and thinking it is the regulator
