mainshaft nut

Forum:

Just wondering about replacing the mainshaft nut, where can I get a replacement in case I need one? Do I need to go through Daihatsu?
Also is there anything else I should replace whilst I'm doing it?
Cheers.

Nuts

No need to replace it as they very rarely wear, just tighten it up as tight as possible and stake it thoroughly.

These are a standard size as they are used on many front wheel drive car drive shafts.

turns out mine had split

turns out mine had split where the nut was staked and stripped a couple of threads off the end of the main shaft. bought a clarke 90, now it's time to call milners for a replacement.
by the way i didn't see it mentioned, there's a gasket between t'box and g'box, which needs replacing when they're separated. hopefully milners will have it for cheap or i'll be making my own from gasket paper.

i had read on here that

i had read on here that milners do them, but i just called milners and they said they only stock what's listed on their website, which unfortunately doesn't include the mainshaft nut.

so does anyone have any idea where i can get a replacement mainshaft nut?

also what i'd REALLY like to know is if it would be possible to use a normal flange nut with the full hex section height, so i can really load it up and so i don't have to do what rf man (i think) suggested about facing off one of my sockets! or would this rub against the transfer case?

anyone know?

thanks.

Suggestion

Have you thought to contact gear box rebuilders !!!!!, They must have access to allsorts of nuts and possibly gaskets or gasket paper

When Mine was done (by a

When Mine was done (by a friend who happened to work for Daihatsu at the time) he used the front wheel baring nut from an Austin Metro. Tightened up to a decent tourque, then spot welded to the shaft. Never had troble with it again. That is about as helpful as I can be I am afraid. It is a fairly standard size nut I am lead to believe.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

So in the end I've bought

So in the end I've bought one from Daihatsu. £8 for a nut (delivered). The parts guy said that they had changed the nut at some point a few years ago as the guys in the workshop were still staking them to keep them on but none were coming back with problems. Dimensionally they appear identical, although perhaps it's possible they changed the grade of steel as the new one looks like a darker grey shade.
Anyway many thanks for everyone's help and advice, much appreciated. Cheers.

If its the same as mine then

If its the same as mine then there are 2 gaskets that need replacing, and I ordered one of them incorrectly! They came to about £20. The joint that I ordered the wrong gasket for I just cleaned up and used flange sealant.

there are two if you take

there are two if you take off the top cover, but if you use a two pence (or 50 pence if you're feeling wealthy) piece to jam the gears, as suggested by some bright spark on here, then there's no need to remove the top cover, hence i only need the one gasket.
out of interest where did you get them from? milners said they don't have them.
many thanks for your advice.
