Battery problem

Forum:

So, long story short, my fourtrak failed its MOT as a write off on a stupidly minor note (well, excessive corrosion in a small area including on one of the seat belt fittings).

So it's been sat at the MOT place for several months now, resulting in the battery being 100% dead when I picked it up last week.

Hooked up to one of these special charging unit things, it's telling me there is a short circuit within the cells, and to take it to a specialist.

Generally, is this a fixable thing, or is it new battery time?

And on a side note. Does anyone know if it's possible to re-weld the seat belt fittings to a more secure part of the chassis and give it an MOT retest??

get another battery and find a welder

your problem is fixable, you weld on new metal, the battery though get another one, next time you have to leave a vehicle somewhere for a time disconect it,things like clocks and radios are continuously running the power down, cost about 60-70 quid for a new-un,

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Battered

Once a battery voltage drops below 10.8 volts it is scrap, it is not an internal short circuit, its a cell breaking down due to vehicle batteries not being deep cycle batteries. Once below this voltage the cells break down, it gives a similar symptom to an internal short circuit.

If you stand any vehicle for a period of time, trickle charge the battery monthly to maintain its charge.

Hi.
Fourtraks are well known for the corrosion within ( driver/ passenger)the seat belt/sills area, this can be easily fixed by welding in a new piece of steel plate, this has been done on my truck and i expect many others, not a big job. Battery life in my experience is about 3 years for piece of mind, and a dead battery will never ,if left for some time ,will not recover its full potential, so buy a new one . Unless kept at full charge, a battery will lose its capacity to hold a charge.
