brakes

Forum:

I now have another problem with my fourtrak! I had new brake pads fitted all round on Wednesday as on Tues one of the pads came away, the front left one (not nice) yesterday while driving along my car suddenly veered to the left and then for the rest of the journey (2 miles) pulled to the left, when I stopped the car it smelt really bad (burning smell) and there was smoke coming out from around the front left wheel. I phoned the garage who said it sounds like the calliper got damaged when the pad came away but it would be ok to drive home, so I did but when I stopped at home the same thing happened, so I have not driven it since, does it sound like the calliper??

seized caliper

The calipers are a doddle to pull apart and clean (might need putting in a press though to push the slider out)the problem is just finding newer parts to put back, which garage done the job cos dont go back there, sounds like a bunch of cowboys, also learn to replace pads yourself, it is one of the most easiest jobs in the world to acheive on most vehicles and will save you a bundle of cash as long as you dont mind getting dirty hands (swarfega), im not saying its definite a seized caliper but certainly sounds like it is, its pulling the brake on as you drive, the garage should have seen this, go and complain and get ya money back!!!!!!! your front left one came away in the first place because you have a problem there.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

OMG, that is exactly the

OMG, that is exactly the same problem, it was my front nearside pad that broke in two and is now sticking. I took it back into the garage on Monday, they could not see anything wrong with the calliper, so took out the cylinder and greased it, so far it has been ok, but I have not driven more than 8 miles at a time, so I guess time will tell!! although reading the other post I do not hold out much hope. I will get my father in law to check the brake light switch. Thanks everyone for your help.

brake light switch/free play

Basically what this idea points to is that there is no free play in the brake peddle so as you drive the brakes are pulled on gently until eventually you notice it - stopping power, you will know if you have free play or not when the engine is running, push down with your hand (not foot)onto the peddle and see how hard/easy it is to move before you get alot of pressure, if there is pressure straight off (hard peddle) then you have no free play and this will pull the brakes on, if you look at a manual for a vehicles braking system they will always talk about a distance of free play in the peddle before pressure.
