Noise from propshaft ?

Forum:

Hi all,I have this lapping sound from underneath my 1988 fourtrak.it sounds like something caught up in the propshaft, but this is not the case! its their freewheeling downhill or driving uphill and increases in noise according to speed. I have replaced the hardy splicer joint on the transfer box end of the front prop which also has up and down movement on the sliding spline, i have cleaned all of this up and gave it a thorough greasing but to no avail. Has anyone else encounterd this problem? if so did you find the answer? Cheers Phil.

Has yours got any sort of lift in the suspension? Transmission noises can be difficult to trace. A lift can alter the angle of the drive shaft, which can set up a harmonic vibration in your shaft, which causes noise, especially on overrun. I had it, and it took ages to find. Try lifting or lowering your the output shaft of your rear prop shaft. What??????? you say. Ok, get some washers and longer 14mm bolts (8 of). Now put an equal number of washers on each of the 8 bolts between the transfer case cross member and the chassis mounts. This effectively lowers the rear of your transfer case, and alters the angle of the output shaft. This shaft should be at the same angle as the input on the pinion of the rear diff. Try varying the number of washers. Dont forget the side mount on the transfer case. If this doesnt improve things, try raising the rear by putting washers between the bottom of the transfer case mount, and the top of the cross member. It is something you will have to play with, and hopefully, eventually, your noise will disappear.
Good Luck
Cheers

Transmission noise

Bundyrumandcoke,
Mine has no lift whatsoever front or rear, and i have since tried it without the front prop on, same! Do you know if its possible to try it with just the front prop on and take the rear one off, in four wheel drive of course with the hub locks on without doing the gearbox any harm?? just to eliminate the rear prop. A mate of mine suggested taking both props off and being towed by a straight bar incase it is the wheel bearings or the diffs! is it possibly one of these??????
Thanks for the input, and i would be gratefull for your opinion on the above tests.
Cheers David, Phil

On the sliding part of the prop is there any play? Had an old land rover that had play on the splines allowing it to wobble, but it felt ok on the vehicle, took it off and it didnt seem to bad changed it and it was ok.

You shouldnt have any problem

You shouldnt have any problems driving in 4wd with the rear prop shaft removed. Its one way of getting you home when you have a crook rear prop. I have just come back from a week away, about 1500km travelled all up. Before heading off, I had noticed a slight squeek when reversing, but didnt have time to fully check it out. When time permitted, when at our destination, I pulled the rear drums off to find grease splattered around the inside of the brake shoes. Just caught the dud rear wheel oil seal, and dying bearing. Easiest thing to do was buy a second hand axle, with reasonable bearing, and a new rear wheel bearing kit to fit when I got back home. While bleeding the brakes, I noticed the rear uni in the prop shaft had a bit of play, so this was replaced with the spare I always carry. Squeek now gone. Beezer, use a process of elimination to find the problem. It could be basically anywhere in the driveline. Check for any movement in the prop shafts, or as suggested elsewhere in this post, for movement in the yoke and spline.
