yrv turbo - checking all the fluids... and of murphy pitches up with his law!!

Forum:

So in the last few days I have been making sure everything is getting sorted out on the car step by step... Had everything under control. Since I bought the car I noticed a very slight scraping sound, which to be quite honest, sounded 100% like brakes needing replacements. And of course I checked the pads and discs and sure enough they are nearing end of life. So I just cruised along with my normal driving and not braking hard at all.

Changed the oil and filter, checked brake fluid and topped up slightly, checked the power steering fluid and added a few mils. Will be ordering the brake discs and pads soon, as well as new plugs next week and then lastly the induction kit next month.
So I thought thats great... all under control.

Then tonight, as I'm going uphill from Wick to Bath, suddnely the revs are climbing but the car is slowing down Shok Immediate worry is I've lost the clutch! (also all sorts of horror stories are going through my mind about buying a dud car with a broken gearbox). I just about made it going 5mph with hazards flashing in 3rd gear and revs blazing away. Thankfully it was all downhill from there. Got home and popped the bonnet and immediately realised I checked absolutely everything EXCEPT the automatic transmission fluid level. I felt like a right idiot. Sure enough the level is showing pretty much empty (checked by following the exact procedure in the owners manual) ShokSad

Really glad I havent been hammering the car at all.
Tomorrow will be buying some fluid at Halfords and topping up. My worries are though:

1)Where has all the fluid gone?
2)Will the clutch be damaged now?
3)is this a symptom of something worse?

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Hello G! That doesn't sound

Hello G! Smile

That doesn't sound good loosing fluid, basically sounds like the autobox has been scraping due to a lack of fluid. Sad

I am under the impression there is an inspection point under the car, so maybe you have lost fluid here?

I have been advised in the passed is if the car has been thrashed a bit you can loose fluid, but not heard of all of it. Also not to freighten you here, but there have been incidents reported of Autoboxes failling on the Turbo. Due to this I have recently had my Autobox fluid replaced, although the last garage talked me out of it as Daihatsu have been quoted as saying that the fluid is for the life of the car? As a rule if the fluid isn't cherry red in colour E.g a grey colour (mine wasn't) then get it changed.

will top up and check...

It was scraping a little and then a bit more just before it started slipping. Not a nice experience on an automatic! I agree that most times the fluid in an auto box is for the life of the car, unless there are problems or excessive wear due to heavy driving habits. I will top up and see how much is actually missing and then check the colour as well. Hope the inspection point is easy to locate, I have not seen any wet patches under the car after parking it. Hopefully this is just a case of sorting the fluid fixing the problem.

Not too bad... thank goodness!

Well I checked the owners manual and saw that you can replace up to 1.8 litres in the autobox, even though it says the capacity is 5litres. So I bought some DexronIII and drained through the sump plug and sure enough about 1.5 litres came out. Topped up 1.8litres, drove around for 15 minutes to warm up and measure on the dipstick in the hot range, car needed a bit more fluid, so in the end added about 2.25 litres after draining 1.5 out!
Running perfectly now! Smile Thats a big relief.
Next items that I am waiting for are the Denso IK20 Iridium spark plugs! Hoping to get 30mpg once all service items done!

Good to hear. Maybe

Good to hear. Maybe something we should all do is check the autobox fluid as we do the engine oil, and hopefully will stop autobox failures Smile
