Fourtrack F75 wrong gearbox ?

Forum:

I have bought a secondhand gearbox to replace the seized one on my F75 1990 2.8 Td Fourtrack. I did not see the donor vehicle but was told it was a 1986 2.8td.
However I notice the low range lever is differently marked - my box says 2H - 4H -neutral- 2L - 4L and the replacement box 2h - 4L
I am wondering if this box will work, or is the difference just in the transfer box Unknw if so could I swap it with mine Unknw
My gearbox failed after I failed to top up the oil, and I ignored a whine in first gear which got louder until total failure after a two hour drive towing a large trailer full of scaffolding. So let this be a lesson ! don't ignore any changes in gearbox noise without checking the oil ! Cray 2

2L? I've never come across

2L? I've never come across one with a 2wd low option. Anyway the 2H 4L only box is probably from a trak with a 4x4 switch on the dash in stead of the lever opperated type. This box will work in 2H and 4L, but if you want 4H you will need to provide power to the vacum pump (or if it is missing, a vacum pump) to make it work. The transfur should be interchangible, but as I said I've never heard of a 2L option...

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

both transfer boxes should

both transfer boxes should drive both propshafts when in low.. you get 2L by leaving the front manual locking hubs unlocked.
on our 89 td high range is 2wd unless the switch on the dash is used .. then the vacuum solenoids (fed from the vacuum pump on the rear of the alternator same as the brake servo) engage the front propshaft. the transfer lever has 3 positions h, n,l

some of the older vehicles didnt have the vacuum system with switch on the dash... (im guessing now) either they didnt have 4H or they had an extra position on the transfer lever ie 2h, 4h, n ,l,

thats not what we mean

What that guy was saying is that he seems to have a 2L option on the transfer box, cant work that one out?

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Typo error

Hi.

I think/sure the poster made an error.

2 Lo , as I understand can only be obtained by not engaging the manual type front hubs. This though can be useful, as a previous poster pointed out, as on a concrete boat slipway, where the engagment of the front axle drive could cause transmission wind up. Though this would place ,if used agressivly, possible damage to the rear axle/gear box due to to the increased loading on components.

never really thought about

never really thought about it before but if you had auto hubs youd be in 2wd until one front wheel started slipping and locked, then youd have 3wd until the other front wheel slipped and locked Unknw
anyway i often use low box when reversing trailers, without locking the manual hubs,

Swap

Dont get too upset, not the end of the world, as long as your transfer box wasnt seized just unbolt them and swap them over, think im right in saying that, also your sure it says 2L??? not seen that before..
