F- reg non turbo diesel gearbox problem- lost 5 gear from removing bolt?

Forum:

hello.

i have a F-reg non turbo diesel fourtrak, on the side of the gearbox (on the pass/nearside) near the top there is a 19mm headed bolt, i took this bolt out and it had a pin on it about an inch long (dont ask why i took it out cos i dont know!)

and since then i have lost 5th gear, does anyone know how i can fix this? do i need to remove the box or can it be done in place.

5th gear

The selector fork for 5th gear pivots on this pin and will have fallen into the gear box. You will need to take the top off the gearbox to put it back. As you suspect, you will have to get the gearbox out to get the top off. It's all obvious how it fits together so isn't difficult, just a fairly big job to remove the gearbox.

Mistaken Identity

Hi all.

Just what was the designer of the gearbox thinking about when he placed two similar plugs at the same level, on either side of the gearbox, one holding a crucial part in place and the other a level/filler plug. A regular problem appearing on the forums.

I still don't really know why

I still don't really know why they had to have the bolt at all, it wouldn't have been a impossible task to cast the pivot as part of the gearbox. Or weld the bolt in place, seeing as you can remove the 5th gear selector from the pivot with it still screwed into the box.

As Alistair said, you've

As Alistair said, you've removed the pivot bolt for the 5th gear selector. You'll have to remove the gearbox, drain the oil and try to fish the arm out from the bottom of the box. Whatever you do, don't drive the truck. If that arm gets sucked between the main and lay shaft its game over. There are hundreds of posts about this, use the search function for more info.
