I have a Sportrak - a 96 Anjou - with auto hubs, and have a question re the engagement of 4WD.
When I want 4WD I follow the handbook guidance and bring the vehicle to a complete stop and after moving the gear lever to 4H then pull away to lock the front hubs. When I want to go back to 2WD I bring the vehicle to a halt again and then move the gearlever back to 2H.
Question - once the front hubs are engaged can I switch from 4WD back to 2WD while on the move, or will this damage the transmission? And also, if this would be ok, would it then be all right to switch to 4WD from 2WD while on the move, providing the front hubs are already locked?
I have to say that I am really enjoying this weather and all the snow. The first real chance I have had to spend some time driving it as a 4WD and appreciating the enormous difference that it makes!

on my sportrak, a 97 xi model, when i change from 4 wheel drive to 2wd, it says i have to reverse for ten foot to disengage the 4wd... is that right?
i am also enjoying the snow, its really given me chance to see what my sporty can do, in fact i have been playing with it in 2wd, and then when i get stuck, i just put it in 4wd, and away i go!!
its been my best xmas present to myself ever!!!
Auto Hubs

Assuming the operation of the auto hubs is the same as on a Fourtrak. i would agree with "intimidator uk"s response, that to disingage the auto hubs one has to reverse for a few yards. I failed to do this on a number of ocasions and had an alarming bangs from the front end of the truck, this probably helped the failure of my auto hubs. I now have manual hubs fitted and no longer have this problem

Sorry, but I think that I was not sufficiently clear with my question.
What I wanted to find out is if it is ok, when you are in 4WD, to to switch to 2WD by just moving the gear lever to 2H without bringing the truck to a halt first? And also if you have then gone to 2WD if you can switch back to 4WD without stopping the vehicle again?
We used to have an old vitara with manual hubs and when the hubs were locked you could switch between 2 and 4WD while on the move but not moving too quickly, and I wondered if my Sporty was capable of the same.

In a word no, it is a manual system which needs to be stationary to prevent sudden shock loadings to the gears themselves as this can strip them, or tear them off.
These use a basic system for reliability, abuse them and they soon wear, adding up to considerable expense, used properly they last the life of the vehicle. Always stop before moving from 2H to 4H, and vice versa.

i think thats exactly what happened to me, i was under the impression that even if you stopped and put it back to 2 wheel drive the front hubs would just remain locked incase i wanted to go back to 4 wheel drive again. It looks like this is not the case.
