New Terios (well to us) and no manual!

Forum:

Hi all!

I am a 4x4 owner of old, but Isuzu is my truck, however I have bought a Daihatsu Terios, who is now called "Sid" for my 18 yr old daughter. He is lovely, S reg, 1.3 SE and has been looked after by main dealer since 1st reg. However, although we have service history complete we have no manual. Can anyone tell me how the diff lock should be used? ie. Does it have to be stationary, in neutral etc.
Its snowing here and I need daughter to be safe!

Thank you. Smile

Welcome

Hi.

First of all I have a Fourtrak and no experience of the Terios transmission, so this is a litle bit of the cuff.

Suggest the diff lock ( i think this is a center diff lock in the gearbox), is only engaged while stationary or at very low speeds, locked as and when required and released when not. When locked in on hard surfaces may cause handling problems or gearbox damage.

Hopefully other owners will come forward on this issuse.

Thank you. I had sort of figured that but just wondered if anyone on here could confirm.

My isuzu is electronic 4x4 which you can do up to 50mph so a different system.

Hopefully the diff lock will get her out of any slippery conditions! Smile

If I remember I'll have a

If I remember I'll have a look at my Mum's when she's around next. However I was under the impresion that the 1300 Terious (the mark 1 Terious?) only has car type 4x4. Ie no low range. Just a dog clutch to drive the rear axle when 4x4 is required. Only talking from vagly remembered conversation with a friend who used to work for Daihatsu when these were new cars.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Sorry. Only remembered about this today. i had a quick look at my Mum's, and it has 4x4 opperated by a dash switch, but no low range. I didn't have time to play, and Mum didn't know, so I don't know if it front or rear wheel drive when in 2wd mode.

Terios diff

Just seen your message.
The dashboard switch electrically locks the centre diff. It seems to work when on the move but probably not recommended and again probably should be unlocked for higher speed and when back on hard surface.
In the snow I did not find I needed it at all. Have only used it when in deepish ruts to help pull car out of the rut.
I have fitted beefier tyres to assist.
Have the owners manual somewhere so will try and look it up.

Terios

Hi AlanG, I was wondering if your 01 model Terios has a Limited Slip Diff fitted on it? As my mate has a 05 1.3 Tracker model and his has no LSD fitted. On my own 1.5 09 Terios SE it comes with a LSD as standard, I found this out one day when I had the Terios jacked up and on axle stands ajusting the rear brakes,( if you turn the one rear wheel in a forward direction the opposite wheel turns in the same forward direction, if no LSD is fitted it will turn in the opposite direction ), just wondering if the early Terios have it fitted as standard or if was a extra on them .
Great 4x4 on or off road. Cheers Shugy.

Advice Wanted

Hi all you Terios owners.

Come on, and respond to the call on how "Sid's" difflock should be correctly used.

Japan's self-styled compact

Japan's self-styled compact car specialist has released the second-generation Terios: slightly longer, more powerful and, crucially, 190mm wider - both inside and out. It was launched in a range of three models: the trademark full-time all-wheel drive with manual or automatic transmission and a two-wheel drive version in manual. The styling has morphed into something more purposeful than its predecessor, wider at the bottom than at the top with prominent wheel arches. There are large combination headlight/indicator units at either side of a split-level grille with a small air intake in the conventional position and a larger one in the colour-coded front bumper.
