Flamin Fourtrak Leccy Gremlins Again!

Forum:

Having solved he previous lighting problem by replacing the rear offside light cluster....a new gremlin emerged today.

Basically, my Trak now has a life of its own.....it switched its sidelights on itself this afternoon!! When I went out to check, thinking I had probably left them on, I found the on the stalk the lights were switched off. Having seen this, I am also very happy that I had switched the lights off in the first place as it was still dark when I got to work.

Anyone heard of this before? Any obvious candidates for the fault?

Cheers

Gremlins

The headlamps are wired by a switched earth circuit rather than a switched live. I would start looking for a wire from the headlamps that is pinched or frayed somewhere and making contact with the metal of the vehicle body thus completing the circuit and lighting the lights. The alternative to this with switched live circuit is a blown fuse at best or a vehicle fire at worst.

The live feed for the headlamps comes from the battery terminal on the starter motor, through a fusible link and then into the loom. Follow this to the lights on both sides, then start looking really carefully at the wiring from the headlamps back to the relay.

Your sidelights may not be part of the same circuit, but that's where I would start.

Alastair.

Oh the fun of Leccy gremlins

Hi.

Go with Alastair's suggestion, a pinched wire engergising a section of the loom. This was my thoughts with your original post, as I had this problem with the rear lights.

Is it both the headlamps? The loom is separate for each lamp for a fare ways along the side of the vehicle, if they are both on then the wiring fault is going to be before they branch off.

its sidelights front and rear

its sidelights front and rear (first click on light stalk) and interestingly the dash illumination. Does not include headlamps.

Cheers folks

Lights and Leccy

Hi.
On my Fourtrak , selection of side lights includes dash lights and a "dim dip" on the headlights, when the ignition is on. The '92 TDX I have for spares even has a warning buzzer if you remove the key and leave the headlights on !!!( of Irish origin).

Edward (ews) '92 Fourtrak 2.8 TDX

Very posh and civilised !!!!!!!!!

very posh and civilized, along with the headlight buzzer, it came with plastic lift out dirt trays in the footwells, also those funny plastic wind deflectors fitted to both doors/windows, plus a lovely twin cup holder emblazoned with the lovely Diahatsu logo fitted to the passenger grab handle area, a lift out load bay protecter, glass insert in the roof hatch. A '92 TDX with a DL51 engine as apposed to the DL52 engine fitted to my 'Chunky". Truck was originaly from Ireland, imported in to the UK, failed MOT on front hub leaking onto brake disc, all for £300, as nice scource of spares for me.

Wouldn't it be worth

Wouldn't it be worth replacing the front hub seal and selling it on or added it to your collection? Seems a shame to scrap it....

Hi Stalin.

I bought it for personal use ,as a spares supply for when the day arives that spares are unobtainable. Though I have had thoughts of refurbishing it. Now on axle stands in a poly tunnel, so we can run it up , to prevent detoriation.

I see where you're coming

I see where you're coming from. I would have thought that there would be accident damaged(depends on what parts needed) trucks that would better serve as donor vehicles. Just seems a shame when yours only has a relativity minor fault.

Hi Stalin. One of the reasons

Hi Stalin.

One of the reasons to purchase was the undamaged body work, though the smell of dog pee put many buyers off!!!.

Though we have thoughts, every one forgive us for this , of removing the bodywork and replacing with that from a MK1 ('48/50's era) 80"/86"Land Rover. And don't ask why !!!!!

I seem to have solved it by removing a 15A blade fuse I had put into a fuse holder on some wires coming off the positive battery terminal.
When sorting the rear light problems a couple of weeks ago I noticed that this fuse was missing, so bunged a new one in. Today, whilst the sidelights were illuminated (while supposedly switched off!)I removed this fuse and they went out. Problem hasnt reoccurred since??? Not sure what this fuse block or the wires are for, and doesnt seem to caused any other problems. Might have to take a pic for explanations.
Left indicator sticking on still, but can live with this as is is on full not flashing, and only an intermittent fault, not all the time.
I blame the previous owner for some 'interesting' DIY wiring (Scotchlocks) off the headlights, presumably for spotlights or something similar??

Damn, sounds like you have a horrible wiring jungle to sort out! That loom with the fuse must be going somewhere awfully strange to make the headlights stick on =/

well....when I stuck the fuse

well....when I stuck the fuse in, it didnt do the light thing for a week or so. It just seems with the recent rain after the snow and cold it has developed. Whipping that fuse out instantly stopped it. Go figure! Think I'll take a pic.
