Breake problems

Forum:

Hi there,
I have just replaced the rear axle om my Rocky (four track) and is now having problems with the brakes. The pedal is going almost to the floor the first time. The next time it is allright when you hit the brake. A few minutes later the same thing happens. It does not feel like air in the system.
I have replaced the main brake cylinder and vented air out many times. It is working but not as before. It has however been without pressure for apr. 3 weeks.
Any ideas folks ???.
Best regards,
Per.

Its still air in the brake li

Its still air in the brake lines. You should be able to just loosen off the rear bleeder nipple and it should self bleed. Watch for the air bubbles. A tip is to get a different colour brake fluid. Here they are available in blue or green. This helps to see when new fluid is coming through. If you have replaced the master cylinder, then all brakes need to be bled. Do the one closest to the master cylinder first, then the next closest, then the rears. You may also have to bleed at the brake proportioning valve, which is in the rear line, about half way back.
A tip for next time. If you have to disconnect a brake line, or for some reason let air into the braking system, (ie replace cups and boots in wheel cylinders) get a set of vice grips, or a G clamp and squeeze the last section of rubber brake hose before the break. This will stop the master cylinder from draining, and you having to bleed the entire system.

Brake problems

Hi there,
Thanks for the advice. I did squeeze the brake lines while exchanging the rear axle and I have vented al lines incl. BP valve.
I will try to bleed the system again.
Thanks again.

problem

When you replaced the axle did you fit new brakes? My old landrover did this even tho i bled it and bled it, had to adjust the shoes and then bleed it. Something to do with the flow of the fluid. Also how r u bleeding it, i use a pressure eazi bleed thing and that seems to work very well.

Good luck

I know this might sound dumb,

I know this might sound dumb, but have the rear breaks been addjusted up? If the auto-adjuster has gotten stuck you may have a rear break that's backing off too fare when not in use and pushing the break fluid too fare back up the line.
