Fourtrak Convertible?

Forum:

Hello,

I am considering buying a Fourtrak (probably a post 1993 TDX) at present and having seen that the back comes off a Sportrak and that the fourtrack appears to be of similar design I wonder -

Does the hard back of the fourtrack come off in a similar manner to that of a Sport track? ie has it been built to be detachable?

If it hasn't been built to be removed easily - how hard would it actually be to remove it (ie is it bolted on or welded?)

TIA

Unfortunatly that Wikipedia

Unfortunatly that Wikipedia entry is inaccurate (for the UK market at least). The leefsprung Fourtraks were avalible in SWB soft top and metel integrated roof only. The LWB came with the 'plastic' raised roof, which is detachible, or as a pick-up. I don't think there was ever a soft top LWB? I know the other variations are true, as I have owned at least one of each in the past.

wouldnt be the first time

Ah thanks for pointing that out, wouldnt be the first time wiki has let me down either.

All leaf sprung vehicles came

All leaf sprung vehicles came to the UK as pick up's, the hard top was fitted in the UK by the supplying dealers. Soft tops were available, but you had to order the top seperately and have it fitted by the supplying dealer, and are as rare as hens teeth.

Some hotter climes may find a good secondhand kit, but it will mean importing it.

When I said pick-ups, I ment

When I said pick-ups, I ment propper flat bed afairs. Not just a roofless LWB Trak. And I am asumming you only mean the LWB's?

The backs bolt on, and have

The backs bolt on, and have two locating pins at the rear.

Simply locate and remove the bolts, lift up the top, remove any stuck sections of gasket, then lift clear of the vehicle.

Replacing it is obviously a reversal.

Takes two of us about 30 minutes to change one.

yea not the easiest of thing on your own

on a side note, those where it bolts to the roll bar on a sporty (not sure if same applies on a fourtrak), does anyone else struggle with those L brackets that hook under it? your got to lift it to get it over the locating pins, which mean bending the L brackets??

im doing it wrong aint i?

Back door

So, Having taken the roof off could I replace the back door with one off a sportrack (so that it splits, and put on a sportrack hood?

Thanks

Don't think either will fit.

Don't think either will fit. The 4trak is that much bigger. For the door, your best bet (if you cant find a soft top donner) will be to by a second hand normal rear door and convert it. If your lucky you'll find some way of making it so you can remove the top half, or put it on at will. I suspect though that you will be changing the door over when you take the roof off. Actually, that's a point. Those of you who take the top off in the summer, what do you do about the rear door? As I have never taken the top off a 4trak i have not had to ponder that question befor...

Replace rear half door with cargo net .

Take a look at Stateside/US offroad mags. Many use a tensioned cargo net in place of rear door in pickup trucks.
