Forum:
I have a '97 Sportrak with auto free wheeling hubs and have been told there is a bit of play in the front O/S hub and the bearing probably could do with changing.
I have downloaded the service manual from here (damn useful!) and it appears that there is only an inner bearing on these, not an outer and inner. It looks a bit complicated on the diagram with removing something described as a "brake drum" from the hub.
Has anyone here changed one of these bearings and is it as complicated as it looks?
No: all bearings comprise an
No: all bearings comprise an innsr and outer bearing and if it is similar to the Fourtrak it is adjustable with a locking nut.
Nev K may be of more use with the sporty front bearing.
Not according to diagram
I have had another look at the diagram in the service manual (bottom diagram on page 39 in the section called "FS", which is the diagram relating to auto free wheeling hub)and it definitely only shows an inner bearing, there is something described as a "brake drum" where the outer bearing would normally be. The bearing itself has an inner and outer separated by needle roller bearings, of course, but there is only one inboard of the hub instead of a pair both inboard and outboard
I don't get it either, I would have thought there was always an outer and inner bearing too.
Mix up with components
Hi.
I think you are geting confused with the components of the "Auto Hubs" mixed up with the "Wheel Bearings", the compentent described as "Brake Drum" is part of the "Auto Hub" assembly. Definitly a inner and outer bearing, followed by a locking assembly and then the components of the Auto Hub, of which the "Brake Drum" is a component.
Fourtrak "Auto Hubs" are of the same build and there are a inner and outer bearing, followed with the the "Auto Hub" components.
Looked at a service manual for the F300/Sportrak and the inner and outer wheel bearings are ilustrated along with the 3 options of hubs, fixed, manual and auto. along with the components for each variant. The inner and outer bearings carry the load, the auto hub just enables the engagement of the drive from the front half shaft
