Forum:
Hello All,
New to this 4x4 forum so please forgive me if repeating previous questions.
I have a J plate 2.8 turbo Fourtrak for moving stuff around on my paintball site. I have lost front wheel drive and from what i have read on hear i might have wound up the transfer box, not all i wind up but thats another story. Anyways stuck in mud the other day showed no drive to the front wheels, after getting out check what i could, in 2wd the front prop will turn by hand, select 4wd this will move slightly back and forth taking up the gear slack.
I have not yet jacked up the front to see what happens,
Question is how much of a job is it to repair? is it costly?
I am a compedent mechanic time served and all that but have no experience with 4wd.
Thanks for taking the time to read and hope you all can help.
Also if anyone fancies some paintballing in the north east i can help !!
hubs
just wondered first of what sort of hubs r on the front axle, auto or manual?
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Hello auto front hubs on
Hello
auto front hubs on this vehicle.
What you have described about
What you have described about the front prop means the transfur is working fine. The most likely culpret is a seized / brocken auto FWH. Second in my oppinion would be a brocken CV joint. The diffs and half shafts are fairly bulet proof.
However something els to think about. Do you have aggresive off road tyres fitted? Are they run at low pressure? Do they have tubes in? I only ask as I got stuck at the bottom of a steep climb (the only way out of a 4x4 site, doh) once. I thought I'd brocken something as she was acting like was in 2wd. It wasn't until a mate was watching, and he could see the rim was spinning inside the tyre. These were very agressive off road tyres with very thick side walls. Even with no air inside it looked fine. I'd gotten stuck in 4x4, but in the prosses of getting out I had spun this wheel inside the tyre, pulled the tube around, and ripped the valve off. Basicly the tyre was gripping the ground better than the wheel it was mounted on. Not likely to be your problem? Don't know, but all I'm saying is sometimes the solution is actually something really easy to fix, but a little obscure to find.
That said, I'd probably still start with the auto hub.
Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
Thanks
for the info, i have read a post on hub maintainance so will be a point to start.
only has road tyres on and inflated no rim spin, but a valid point.
I guess the way to check the hub operation will be to jack up a wheel at a time in 4wd and see if it spins or not
I know what i,m doing next time on on site with nowt better to do !!!!!
