Fourtrak Manuel Front Hub query

Forum:

1988 petrol Foutrak F85
Looking on the front hubs recently I came across a hexican shaped nut on top.
When I unscrewed it, it looks as if it should be filled with something ie oil or grease.
Can anybody tell me if anything should go in there and why?
I can't find anything about it in the manuals I have.
Regards Martin

This nut opens directly into the swivel cavity. Earlier F series Daihatsu's had a grease nipple in this nut, to allow grease to be pumped into this cavity. I have modified mine and now have a grease nipple in each. Dont know what the actual use for them in the later model F series vehicles is, perhaps its just there to fill a hole that is still cast when the hub is manufactered.

Hi Bundy,
Thanks for your answer, It makes things a bit clearer, but I'm still a puzzled about this.
Are you suppose to fill the cavity with grease?
The cavities on mine are dry, but that's no surprise as my foutrak was in a bit of a state when I bought it and I have been cleaning, repairing and replacing parts for the past twelve months. The engine, body and chassis are good but most everything else was shot.
The cavity is a big one and would take a awful lot of grease to fill it.
I've looked in the Foutrak workshop manual and the Toyota 3Y book I have and it does not mention it at all.
Cheers Martin

Not exacly sure of the correct answer, but the CV must be well packed with grease. My manual states to fill the CV cavity completely, and to grease the inside of the axle cavity to at least 10mm thick with Lithium based grease. Excess in the cavity wont do any harm. If you filled it, I suppose, all the better.
